The Student Room Group

What is University Halls of Residence like?

Since I’m applying to university later this year and I don’t know anything about university can someone tell me about how living in university accommodation works?

Do you actually sleep in the same room as other students? Or do you live in a flat with others but have your own bedroom?

Do you share a kitchen or do you have your own?

Do you have to share bathrooms with the people in your halls of residence or not?

Do you have to use the same washing machine as everyone in your halls of residence?

Also do you generally socialise with the people in your halls of residence / flat or does everyone mind their own business?

Thank you so much for your help!!

You can share (rare) or have your own bedroom. You will share a kitchen. Bathrooms can be shared or ensuite (more expensive). Washing machines are shared and how much you socialise depends on you and your flat.

Hi, I've moved this to University life, a more relevant forum

I'll answer briefly - others may give better (longer) answers

* you have your own bedroom
* you share a kitchen with others - probably 10 or so.
* some bedrooms have an ensuite, most don't (you can request ensuite when you book accomodation). If you have a shared bathroom you would usually share with the same group as the kitchen, although there might be more than one shared bathroom....
* there will be central laundry facility shared by a lot of students.
* yes you socialise with some/all of the group you share with.

1) MOST of the time at MOST universities, YES. However, I know Glasgow University has shared bedrooms which does work out to be significantly cheaper I believe.

2) Most people will share a kitchen unless you can/are willing to fork out the cash for a studio where you'll have a private kitchenette. This is rather anti-social but it's totally up to you.

3) Depends if you're willing to pay more money for an en-suite room. Some halls have a setup similar to a public bathroom with cubicles + cubicle showers for your entire block, and some just have a normal domestic toilet + shower setup between say, 2 people.

4) SOME halls will have a washing machine in the kitchen. If not, you'll have to use something called Circuit Laundry which is usually located downstairs on the ground floor and you'll pay something like £2.50-£3.00 per wash and £1.50-£2 per dry. You can either pay by coins or an app if your accommodation supports this.

5) Depends if YOU want to socialise. Most people generally do have events in their kitchen (pre-drinks or just sitting down having a chat etc).

You have your own bedroom, normally with a desk, chair, bed and some storage e.g. wardrobe and drawers. They are normally flats, yes, within larger blocks. My accommodation for example has 4 flats per floor, and 4 floors per block.

You will share a kitchen and living area. You get your own shelf in the fridge and, in my case, the door is a free-for-all. You also get one drawer in the freezer, one cupboard and one drawer. The cupboard under the sink is in 4 compartments, so you get 1 compartment each (in my kitchen anyway). That's plenty of space.

Some accommodation will be ensuite, others will be shared. I have my own bathroom which is just shower, toilet and sink. It's small, but that's fine because it's only me using it. Other accommodation will be shared. How many you share with depends on the accommodation.

Yes, you share the laundry facilities. My accommodation has 6 washers and 6 dryers for about 500 of us. Only once was there a queue for the machines. It's typically okay though. I like to do my washing between 7-8am to get it out of the way, so I have no issues.

It's a mix - during the day it's doing your own thing because you have lectures, coursework and paid jobs as well to do. A couple of times we will chat while we each make dinner or in the evenings. My flat is pretty quiet which I like, so there's never a lot of socialising. Typically just chance meetings if we happen to be in the kitchen at the same time and start talking.

Do you share a kitchen or do you have your own?

99% of students in halls will share a kitchen. The shared kitchen usuaslly serves as the main social space in a flat. You do get studio flats where you get your own kitchen but these are usually expensive- beyond what most students could afford.

Do you have to share bathrooms with the people in your halls of residence or not?

Depends- you get some halls which are ensuite i.e. each student gets their own shower room just off their bedroom. Some halls each student has a sink in their room but has to share toilet & shower facilities and some halls you don't have any bathroom facilities in the room. The more you have to yourself the more expensive the room is.

Do you have to use the same washing machine as everyone in your halls of residence?

Yes, there will be communal laundry facilities. These may be located somewhere else on campus and not in your halls.

Also do you generally socialise with the people in your halls of residence / flat or does everyone mind their own business?

Usually what happens is when people first move into halls they stick with their flatmates because they don't know anyone else. As they get to know other people e.g. coursemates and through societies they decide who they actually want to be friends with. So in some flats people decide to stick together and in others people do their own thing after a while. You always get the odd person though who never wants to socialise with their flat at all, they might be very shy or not speak much English.

Thank you so much for your help!!

1. Outside London having a room to yourself is the norm with some universities having a few shared bedrooms i.e. bedrooms with two beds in. In London sharing a room with two or even thre students is much more common.

2. 99% of students in halls will share a kitchen. The shared kitchen usuaslly serves as the main social space in a flat. You do get studio flats where you get your own kitchen but these are usually expensive- beyond what most students could afford.
