Got denied for a student account

I had an application meeting with Barclays bank yesterday in order to open a student account with a £500 overdraft. I was absolutely relying on this as I am in major financial difficulty this year and haven't found a part time job. It was meant to tide me over until I receive my next student loan instalment next month.

We went through the setting up process and just as I though everything was going swimmingly, she stared at her screen in disbelief as I had been rejected an account. Apparently in all the time she has worked there this was the first time she had encountered anybody being rejected. I have a really bad credit score as I have been in financial trouble and nobody to help me. I can't even afford food and have missed a few bills this year, so I would imagine my score would be the lowest possible. The thing is, when I first visited the bank last week to set up an appointment, the bank teller told me that my credit score would not affect the decision. I have lived in a lot of addresses within the past few years as well and I was told that perhaps the system found this a bit dodgy.

It just really sucks, as I said I was relying on that and to be told I am the only person to have been rejected is pretty bad. Has anybody else been rejected before? What would be the cause of this...

Perhaps I will have to go begging, I don't know if I see any other option thus far :frown:

Your bank unfortunately has provided horrendous customer service to you, any type of borrowing will take into account your credit score so they shouldn't have told you that and they certainly shouldnt have been unprofessional by saying you're the only person to have had that experience.
Missed payments would certainly have done some harm to your rating and whatever the financial trouble is could also. Most universities offer hardship loans if you can show how you're in show much trouble so that could help you keep going until your next loan payment. you should get a free trial from a credit report agency so you can see what the problems are, moneysavingexpert has a free one that shows you parts of your report.
As above - it was always going to depend on a credit score and the bank employee must have not worked very long if they've never seen someone denied before!

An overdraft would have only been a temporary solution anyway. Seek help from the uni, and friends and family if available, and work out how this is going to work long term.

Hey, unfortunately I have already had VC loans etc from the uni at the beginning of the year and borrowed £50 last month for food...I spoke to them about a hardship loan and was told that all there was available now was the summer grant in which I will have to wait until June.

So you've exhausted all of the university options, as above what about family/friends temporarily? Is your loan very short of your living costs? do you have any debts at the moment that need paying if so the citizen advice bureau could help possibly?

I don't know anybody in my family who could help. My parents are separated and can't afford to help. I borrowed from my sister but still haven't been able to pay her back. I do have debts to the uni (The VC loan), to Smartpig student payday loan, to my sister and to my internet provided (I missed the bill this morning as I can't afford to pay).

As I said, I literally don't see an option at the moment. I have never ever considered begging before, and it would be kinda humiliating, but I'm also pretty desperate and I may have to resort to it.

I think you should consider speaking to the citizens advice bureau or a debt management charity like step change, you should get some minimum payment plan in place for the payday loan before things get any worse. Seemingly your loan isn't enough to live off so perhaps you should consider switching to a part time degree so you could work to sort your finances out.

Switching to a part time degree is an option that I have considered. I currently study full-time Psychology at the University of East Anglia, which is a 3 year course. I presume that if I finish this academic year then I could switch over to say, the OU? My only worry is that attaining a degree through a part time education provider such as the OU may make me less employable than a full-time degree from a university.

The open university course looks like it's BPS accredited so i think you would be okay to go onto graduate courses with it and you shouldnt have much trouble getting a credit transfer to them.

...to Smartpig student payday loan...

Oh god. So what's the APR on that - 1000+%? Got to get rid of it ASAP.

Really think you need to talk to the uni again about your options. You've been burning through lines of credit yet somehow still don't have money - this is not sustainable.
