Yep, I did. I rearranged my room a couple of months ago now. Those photos were taken in the first week.

I hope Accomodation isn't as big a shambles as last year otherwise they'll have to open Mary Gee again

Isnt it really expensive aswell? (sorry just assuming you know there lol)

I heard some girl moaning on the bus about the fact that its £6000 a year to live there, which is crazy expensive compared to a standard in Opal which is less then £4000.

Wonder if they are still guarenteeing accommodation to everyone this year :s-smilie:
Or maybe they will toughen up on entry requirements and stop letting people who miss their offer by a long shot in.

It's just under £6000 for a studio flat but the other types of room are cheaper, about £4000 for a standard ensuite.

It will definitely be interesting to see what happens with this year's intake!!

When can you first apply for accomodation?

For conditional offers, you get it the day on/after your A-level results arrive! Unconditional offers can apply June time I believe. You'll get a pack with it all in, so I wouldn't worry.

Can you get a good TV reception signal in the Oadby Halls Of Residence for a TV or a laptop watching TV channels in your room? Or does it vary between separate Halls and if so, how?
My television signal is okay but I had to buy an ariel with an inbuilt amp for the signal. But my flatmate across the hall gets atrocious pictures and cancelled her TV licence accordingly.

You don't need a TV signal to watch shows on your laptop though. BBC, ITV and Channel4 all put the programmes online to watch when you want with programmes such as iPlayer and 4oD which are largely free as long as you catch the programme at the right time.

My tv reception is really bad in halls...... the only reason i use my tv is for the DVD player. I mean its alright occasionally.... mainly depending on the weather... if its windy i have no hope... if its not its not to bad.
But as faery_lights said you can watch it on your laptop with iplayer and 4oD so a tv isnt really neccesary.

I watched TV via my laptop and it freezes all the time. I can honestly say that paying out for a TV licence is not worth it. You can just use 4od and other (perhaps not so legal) sites! I barely watch my TV, i'd either doing work or going out with friends. In the first year, you're doing all sorts of things, and never find time for it. If you are thinking of getting a TV, i'd wait until you get there and see how many times you actually want to watch it. If it's a fair few, then perhaps getting a TV licence is worth it. But otherwise, i'd say there's plenty of other ways to watch stuff.
My tv signal is alright, but even with a booster ariel its below average id say. Some channels are alright but others are really grainey and hardly worth watching.

Moble phone signals crap too, luckily I get signal where I am but most people in my building dont get any and have to go outside to make calls and stuff :s-smilie:

(I should mention I meant phone signals crap in halls- [in mine atleast, John Foster] rather than the city itself, thats ok as far as I know)

It really is just generally BAD signal whatever network you're on. O2 works for me, but i have to put it near the window to get some. If you put it on the window-sill you're generally okay

I think its everything but O2 seems to be pretty bad. A few people have switched since being here. Im on Virgin and im fine most of the time, but anywhere in the building other than in my room or the kitchen 0 signal
I'm with Orange and I get great signal everywhere in Leicester EXCEPT Halls of Residence and the library

Im with t - mobile and i get great reception all over Leicester including halls of residence.... granted not the new builds aka john foster/ bowder.... but apart from that i get it all over.... well except the library. But i have no issue with it really. It serves me perfectly!

Anywhere in Oadby student village is good. So thats John Foster- either the pavillions, The Coppice, one of the houses, Or GMS, Bowder etc.
Then narrow it down further by deciding if you want ensuite, how much you can afford for rent (Youre looking at about £95p/w for one of the New ensuite pavillions at John Foster, all bills included if that gives you a bit of an idea)
law@leics
i cant decide between john fosters and opal court.

Opal court is probably going to be over flowing with 2nd 3rd years this year. They had to turn alot of 2nd 3rd years who applied there away as they ran out of rooms for them, just to let you know incase that was a problem.

Also incase you didnt already, know, at opal court you have to put down a £250 deposit (you dont have to anywhere else unless you are an international/postgrad) and you also have to pay for your own internet on top of your rent, whereas thats included at other places.
I didn't even know you *could* get Opal if you were in your 1st year lol!

did anyone else get into opal?
law@leics
but are there any first years at all? i know its avaliable to them but i mean do many actually go? yeah the fee for internet is like £160 but its broadband style. whats it like in the other places? internet quite slow? also, apparently you cant use hair dryers in the rooms so what how will i dry and straighten my hair???

I think there are some, but not many. If you applied there, you would be placed with other first years id have thought so that wouldnt be a problem, but it'll be nothing like living in the student village with over 1000 other first years

Internet is good in halls now, been fixed. It was always fast, but some websites just wouldnt load, but a complaint was made and they fixed it. Internet is broardband in halls.

Also, the thing about hairdryers and whatnot is rubbish, you can use them I do all thet time. They just dont want people running up the bill with powerful electrics
