Nobody really worth listening to would post here..

Well, that is true.

yes, well, we are all just "children who know very little of the world"

....who really aren't clever enough to go forums pretending to be people who rank/review universities

but I will give him this - he actually got people to BELIEVE him!! baaaahahaha
I went to Westminster; here is my ridiculously long story I feel compelled to write after reading so much about the Uni on here over the last hour or so.
I was there for two years doing Computer Science at the Harrow Campus. Generally my experiences were ok/good, particularly in the final year. The first year (second of course) was difficult, one lecturer in particular was beyond awful, he would just try and teach a "life lesson" every week, rather than teaching the subject, I went to the first two and never went again. Fair enough, I might not have given him a proper chance and others certainly did not complain about him as much.

Final year I chose my modules based on the lecturers I had been taught by, who I was sure were decent, apart from in one module. I have no real idea why I chose it, other than the fact the syllabus seemed mildly interesting at the time. It wasn't a Computer Science module but from a similar department and I had no idea on who the lecturers were. It was run by two lecturers, one of which was the course leader of the course the module belonged to.

Long story short, the course leader was the type to do everything he could to get everyone to pass. He would spend lectures basically writing up exam questions and answers, which would then presumably come up in the final exam (a few did, a few didn’t). I was quite shocked at the guy and how he got away with some of the things he did; I just kept my head down and got on with it. Initially I assumed I was just imagining it, i.e. the questions on the board were “relevant” questions from previous years, which I’ve seen a few others Unis do (top Unis that is) on their site.

He also mentioned during on lecture another Uni who had been caught “giving answers to exam papers/bumping up grades when possible”, he named the Uni and mentioned the whole department/course got scrapped. I’ve done a search on Google but found no record, another London former polly however. Whilst this lecturer was awful, the other was amazing and possibly one of the best I have actually met (I previously went to another Uni for two years, drinking and nothing else so I don’t have great experiences) who had been there for some 35-40 years.
The other side of the coin was on another final year module, with a guy who had got his PHD from one of the top 5 Unis in the country. He was also another one of the greatest lecturers I have met, a fantastic teacher who was always there to help. Having done some research before my finals, I noticed the average result over the last 5 years (for his modules exam) was JUST OVER FORTY PERCENT. I initially thought it was due to non-takers, i.e. included a bunch of 0%s, but alas that was not the case. In this particular module you had to work your ass off to get any sort of decent grade, no help here whatsoever, as it should be. This was the general trend for most Computer Science modules, with most average marks being around 45-50%, this actually made me feel a lot better in an odd way.
Anyway, to compare my experiences at the previous Unis were also quite shocking. For example, the first semester of a Computer Science course we were taught “Alice”, a programming tool to help kids (at most the age of 13) how to program. When I first sat there I thought it was a joke, but alas they continued this for six weeks. I went to the one lecture, used the programming skills I had learnt on my college course (BND Software Engineering) to get through.

The other issue with the previous institution I went to was the lack of photo ID. There were students taking exams for each other, with the lecturers in the exam hall having no idea/way of checking. Sure, it sounds unlikely, but a third year could quite happily have taken a first year’s exam without anyone really knowing (unlikely as lecturers will probably recognise student in third year, but by no means will they certainly do so). You could quite easily have got those who work in industry to do the exams for you also....

I have come to the conclusion that it really all comes down to student motivation/interest. Some of the students just could not give two hoots about their degree, they see it as a “paid” holiday (read student loan) to go move somewhere new and get “right on it”, receiving a piece of paper at the end of it that is supposed to get them a job. I know, I was one of them for two years that went to <5% of lectures, getting through the first year purely on knowledge from college. Second year I didn’t get through as I didn’t do any of the course work, which was obviously stupid.

Uni is what you put into it etc. Sure, you might struggle to get a job when you graduate, but I’ve had plenty of offers (albeit with a First) and had a few before I graduated with a predicted 2:i. I hope to go on to do a Masters at a top Uni and experience what it is like working with students who care and try hard.

p.s. From what I’ve heard of the fashion department, it is true what most say, it is top notch. Don’t forget fashion is fashion, they probably think it is cool to hire from a lower ranked uni . On a serious note though, the previous Uni I went to had a shi* hot fashion department and the same can be said of Westminster.

Wooohooo...for a minute then, I thought I was going to have to re-consider my application to Fashion Buying Management at Westminster..Lol....

Can I ask, which uni it was that u 'used' to or 'ended up' at??? Bit confused...so u USED to go to Westminster but left ??
No, I finsihed at Westminster, had two years at a University prior to that, then two years at Westminster. It is generally not that bad, has very good facilities and from what I have seen of the halls at Harrow, they are pretty good too.

The issue comes with some lecturers who can be pretty awful, but having said that I think it depends on what you want in a lecturer.

The fashion department has great links with the industry (as previously mentioned), seems to be one of the better places.

They also replaced the head guy (Chancellor? President? No idea what these positions are called) who has started kicking departments into gear, think he got rid of quite a few lecturers already from what I have heard.

I am looking to get into fashion buying and merchandsing I have 1 A level in business studies but at a D and I am currently doing a fashion marketing course at college, and my GCSES are not that good so I dont know where I could actually get in? I am looking to do a foundation degree or a course with year zero thanks if anyone could help
To the above poster - you're best asking respective universities directly what they can offer you. Take a look at which universities you're interested in, look at their courses and e-mail admissions or course enquires; sometimes a foundation year usually isn't publicised very well on some university websites and you might just have enough to get on to one of these courses; but obviously each university differs.

You should also consider if the foundation course is taught at the university and by university staff - as this will prepare you better for the actual degree and are usually better quality.

Some universities hold their foundation years at associated further education colleges, so even though they (in theory) have cooperated with the University regarding course content and structure etc. the people teaching you won't be university staff (who know what skills you'll need for the degree) and the general atmosphere will be different - plus actual university staff will know how best to prepare you for the actual degree and what will help you best succeed. Just some things you should keep in mind when you do your enquires.

Good luck.

Hi all!

I want to study International Business with French and I am considering of putting Westminster as my firm choice. Though I have been accepted from "higher ranked" unis I think Westminster will be suitable for me.

Is there anyone who study this? What are your opinions for the Business Department?
Since my last post I landed a job at a large IT company (think networking, biggest there is) and have been accepted to study for an MSc at LSE (ADMIS).

I'm waiting on funding results for the MSc and the work is going ok, at the end of the day this is a company any IT grad would like to work at.

In hindsight, going to the "best Uni" you possibly can is paramount in my opinion. The Uni you went to will matter, there is no doubt about that. No matter what way you look at it, you will need to ensure you have the best reputation on your CV. Not having the "right" uni won't totally rule you out and necessarily leave you stacking shelves, but it will make it very difficult to get the better jobs.

My friends on a PR course at westminster...enjoying it very much!

In first year you do a bit of PR/journalism...and 2nd/3rd year it's full on campaign projects, plus you have to take media theories.

Lecturers help you out a lot, and you get talks from those in the industry, and they also offer some good internships/work experience which you can use as an extra module.

I really want to talk witj somebody before putting it as my firm choice.

Please if there is somebody out there studying Business in Wmin ,PM me )

Westminster has a crappy rep but I've applied there as a 5th choice, and they gave me a conditional of BBB.

I wasn't expecting such a high offer from them for a business course. I'm going to be rejecting them anyway, heh.

I chose Westminster and I am really happy with it.) It has much more advantages than Kingston or Royal Holloway!

So what about the scholarship offered in Wmin?I don understand how my tutor has to make a comment on my financial situation? In my country it is not common my teachers or anyone else to know about the financial situation in my family. So I find this very odd..

If you can clarify this to me I will appreciate it much:smile:

Pff. Maybe for the mainstream subjects like English or History.

I'm studying Chinese though, and I doubt anyone will give much of a **** where I went to uni if I can speak Chinese.

Does anyone have any idea where I can get a Student ID?

In the site ,it says that my student id is on every letter that i receive from the uni.

I have received only one till this moment, which is about the conditional offer that was made to me.

Above my name and address there is a reference which is 8 numbers.

Is this the student ID?

Thanks

For this type of question you need to check the website or e-mail someone at the university who will know.
