Has anyone worked night shifts before?

I'm going to change department at my local supermarket from Grocery part-time to Nightshift full-time in a few weeks, for now I'm on a trial period to see how I cope. I'll be working my arse off there until March then I'm going on an expedition overseas until June/July followed by weeks of work experience and volunteer work.

I'll be doing these nights: Saturday, Sunday, Monday and Thursday. £7.20 per hour, £10.80 on Sundays with the shift times being 10pm until 8am. Everyone I know is at Uni so I won't exactly miss much!

I know it'll be hard at first but I want to know if anyone else has experience of night work and what tips they have. I have the 4 pack of Red Bull!

Yes I've been working nights (auxillary nurse) for the last five years. It may take a little time for your body to adjust to the different sleep patterns but its really not bad when you get used to it. Invest in an eye mask for sleeping during the day, I wouldn't go without mine now

Good good! Thanks for replying, I'll definately check out the eyemask things (I know what you mean).

It'll probably feel odd at first but hey, I'm a student so staying up all night the sleeping until late afternoon is what I do anyway! I've had plenty of all-nighter experience from the days before A2 IT coursework deadlines!

Working nights at a supermarket sucks. I did it for awhile but the problem wasn't keeping awake or not seeing my friends. The people who work the night shift are usually creepy though they do have some good stories. Plus the people who come into the supermarket at night are crabby or on drugs or just freaky. You will see no sweet little old ladies unless you're still there at 5 or 6am which is when they are waking up. So my problems were the boredom and the weirdos basically. If you're good with boredom and weirdos you'll be fine. Good luck.

This supermarket isn't 24 hour and it's huge, it shuts at 10pm weekdays, 7pm saturdays and 4pm sundays. Most of the nightshift (I've met many when finishing Friday shift at 10pm) seem nice and there are even a few people my age working there! I've also known one of the nightshift frozen guys for a few years so it won't e a problem.

Bloody old ladies, I'm so glad to be giving the middle finger to checkouts.

Well, I've done it for a week and it's all good so far! Extremely exhausting but well worth it.

If you're working night shifts now, then overseas, then voluntary work, you are going to be really really tired when you start uni.

completely agree

my friend used to work at pizza express as a waitress and she had to do over-time till as late as after midnight sometimes...it really left her shattered and the pay was only £3.50/hr so she left

All i can say is that it might take a while for your sleeping pattern to change but it takes even longer to re-adjust back so try and keep good sleeping hours. Get up during the day when you have to instead of sleeping all day even though you work nights. Thats all i really know!

Just about to go off to work, someone I know has already quit because the job is too stressful.

Anyone else doing nightshift work? Katiesado, how long did you do nightshift for?

Wow, another old thread!

I've nominally agreed to work until 2am on Friday evenings...

Reply 14

Yeah, thought I'd give it a good kick as not many people posted in it

How're you gonna get home?

Sounds like my kind of job, stock room with no people to hassle me.

I dont mind repetitive work

You should apply then, especially as you have no other job.

The money will be great for Uni and you can always quit after Xmas.
