What does the statement: know that the probability sum of mutually exclusive events is 1 mean?

I think you mix up mutually exclusive events and collectively exhaustive events. Two events are mutually exclusive if they cannot occur at the same time, it does not mean say anything about both does not occur at the same time. Two events are collectively exhaustive if one of the events must occur, in other words, P(A or B) = 1.
