Lost?!

hi

So, I got A*AA in my Alevels (in Chemistry, Biology and Maths) and applied for Dentistry twice now and have been rejected both times after interviews. I know last year i wasn't fully focusedd on the interviews because A-levels etc. but this year I know I improved overall on my interview skills. The reason I got rejected was because my interview wasn't as good compared to other people. I guess it's just luck. I really want to do Dentistry and don't have much of an interest in any other courses. I want some advice regarding what to do this year? Should I reapply for Dentistry a third time and do another gap year, or look into other related courses or (as suggested by people) to do a dental nursing course for the year, then apply again for Dentistry..? Also, is there any advice or techniques on how to do well at interviews??? Please help!!

What’s stopping you from applying next year even if you do get a dental nurse position? Working as a dental nurse would give you full time insight into working in a practice so loads to talk about in interview. Plus you’ll be working with dentists who will all have applied to dental school at some point. If you really want dentistry then I think it makes sense to work in a dental practice and that doesn’t mean you can’t apply to dental school.

To do a dental nurse course you do need to be working as a dental nurse or get a position whilst you study as you will need the practical experience to get the qualification.

Hey!
I think you defs should reapply again because tbh if you can’t think of doing any other course and your heart is in dentistry then I don’t think it would be worthwhile applying to anything else. As well you could earn money along the side and maybe take more time to consider if you don’t get into dentistry the following time what else you could do rather than rush into a course that you aren’t particularly interested in. If you don’t mind me asking how did you prep for your interviews?

The only problem is that dental nursing takes at least 2 years in order to be qualified. If I re-apply next year to Dentistry, I won’t be be able to finish the dental nurse course. Let’s say I get invited for an interview, they will question me why I’m studying dental nurse and since I won’t be finishing the course and have to drop out of the dental nurse course, they might think that I will also drop out of dentistry at one point.

Dental nursing doesn’t have to take 2 years. It’s probably the easiest way to see more of what goes on in a dental practice and get to work with dentists.

Only other advice is if dentistry is what you want then speak to the dental schools and find out what they want you to do better. As you got interviews it sounds like that is what needs preparation. You could also ask your own dentist for advice.

The way I prepared myself for the interviews was by writing down all the potential questions they could ask and answer them. I also bought a book for dental interviews which included ideal answers for specific questions and ethical issues. Most of the questions i prepared for did actuallly come up on the interview. And compared to last year I think I have improved myself by at least 150%. I do really want to re-apply to Dentistry but what’s the point if I don’t realise where I went wrong during the interviews. Maybe my answers weren’t that great?!

Hey!

I’m really sorry to hear that. I can’t even begin to imagine how you’re feeling right now. I was in a similar position to yourself (being a gap year applicant) and I remember how demoralising it was the first time I applied and getting all round rejections. But just know you can do it!

Maybe you could ask the uni’s you applied to for feedback. And you could perhaps organise mock interviews and record it to see how you come across. I know the universities say that they test a specific quality at each station (for MMI style interviews) but I wonder if they actually factor in your personality and just how you come across as a person.

I know it’s hard not to feel demoralised but you can do it! Maybe you did give a really good interview and the uni really wanted to offer you a place but they genuinely just didn’t have enough spaces. Maybe you might get a place in clearing?

I wish you the very best of luck with everything. If I can help in any way, just PM me 😊

If I were you I’d give it another try, you have good Alevels it might be third time lucky! Get your feedback and see what you need to work on. One of my friends from school got into medicine on his 3rd attempt. Dentistry is a long course and in my opinion a year won’t make a difference. If you do a degree first remember you won’t get funding for the next degree unless you go for a graduate course. If dentistry is what you want to do you’ll get in eventually with your grades in hand you’re already one step ahead.
Interviews are all about practise. Instead of practising by yourself how about mock interviews with a teacher, family members, friends for example or even a dentist or a student you know. Good luck!
