March for Our Lives, who organised the protest, have a set of proposals they're petitioning for on their website: https://marchforourlives.com/sign/

Obviously there is a lot of discord, people will always disagree about what exactly the best solution is but to suggest that absolutely no-one is putting forward ideas is simply not true.

Two utterly pointless measures. and one irrelevant one.

1. "Assault Weapons" Stupid. Stupid. Stupid. Can any of these people even define an "assault weapon"? There is no reason to believe that this would in any way change things. Most school shootings - indeed most gun deaths involve pistols.

2. "High-capacity magazines". Pointless. The idea that this will save lives in absurd. Magazines get changed in seconds, sometimes one or two seconds. What are we even talking about? Limiting them to 20? 10? Because that's going to change anything? Again - handgun magazine sizes have been limited in many States for years and that hasn't prevented school shootings or even mitigated them in any real way. At Parkland, the shooter apparently had low-capacity magazines as he for some reason couldn't fit larger ones in his bag.

3. "Close a loophole" Well, anything that increases background checks might be a good idea - but if the idea is to prevent people who shouldn't have guns getting hold of them - that's a good idea too.....
...and none of this seems applicable in any way to school shootings in general, and Parkland in particular.

The issues with Parkland are clearly of failure of policing, security and social services.

Taking away legally held weapons in general is going to be a short and medium term non-starter. If you want to rid the US of firearms, start now with a view to a 100-200 year timescale. A timescale that will probably see out the lifecycle of this kind of weapon.

Get better police, better security and intervene with people who are clearly dangerous. Start with audit of all police department policies toward active shooters. Heads must roll at the FBI and Broward County Sheriffs office, and mental health services. Bring in people and processes that will take dangerous people seriously early on. Get them help and remove their firearms if they shouldn't have them.

Lockdown procedures at schools are something to think about - but in some sense, it may make things worse if you isolate a shooter in a certain area - you may be creating a seige situation.

Would not having a rifle have stopped the Parkland shooter? Or would he just have turned up with a bag full of pistols?

He already had low-capacity magazines.

Background checks are irrelevant if the police, FBI and social services are not going to act when a person is reported over and over and over, and even the shooter tried to warn the authorities.
