History at Durham

Hiya, just wandering if anyone is applying to do history at Durham this year or is already there doing it? Is it good?
I really really wanna come to Durham but i cant decide between the normal history course (v100) or ancient, medieval and modern History. Any one got any advice?

Also normal history says it requires AAA, while ancient medieval and modern requires AAB. I'm predicted AAA but realistically I think i'll get AAB (well, hopefgully anyway) and was just wandering if anyone got any AAB offers for the V100 course? Also, the prospectus says that in 2003 there were 1547 applications and 612 offers made for History, but for Anicent medievval and modern there were 70 applications for 25 places, making that course more competitive. Any advice on what to do at all?!

Thank you!

I am studying History at Durham. When I applied (I'm a second year) the standard offer was AAB which was what I was offered although I and most people I know got at least AAA which is probably why they upped the requirements.

I do the V100 course - ancient and medieval really isn't my scene!

The course is (mostly) interesting but it's not easy. You have to be prepared to work hard and to motivate yourself.

Just to give you a flavour of what's on offer (there are plenty of modules to choose from) these are the modules I did last year:-
Foundations of Medieval England (Medieval)
Regional and National Identity In the British Isles (Early Modern)
Cold War (Modern)
Modernity, Crisis and Destruction (Modern)
Slavery In Africa (Modern)
One from another department

This year I'm doing:-
Kings and Conflict (Medieval)
French Monarchy and the People of France (Early Modern)
Imperialism, Nationalism and Islam: Egypt and the Sudan (Modern)
Making of Modern Africa (Modern)
British Democracy: 1900-1990 (Modern)
Modern US Presdidency (Modern)

You have to study one medieval, one early mdoern and two modern in your first year and the rest you can choose.

Durham is a pretty (but VERY hilly) place to live and study.

If you want anymore info post another message and I'll try to help!

Thanks very much! I've applied to do V100 now. I really want to go, but i don't think I'll get in, its so competitive. The website says the typical offer for v100 is AAB, but the prospectus says AAA so i'm still confused!
I've got a loaddd of questions, so i'm just gunna fire them at you! Sorry!
Is the course really hard then? How much lecture/seminar time do you get? And how much work do you do get out of the lectures etc? Do you enjoy the course? Do you enjoy being at Durham? What college are you at? I've been looking at the website about the course, and it looks really flexible. It says you can pick up two modules from other departments..Can this be any department at all?
Sorry for all the quesions, and thanks very much!

I'm at St Mary's (get the easiest question out the way first!) I do six modules and I have one lecture a week for each (so 6 one hour lectures each work) and 3 seminars a term (in the first two terms) for each. Seminars and lectures are both an hour although in reality they're a bit less.

Assessment wise each module has two essays (2000 words) in the first two terms and then an exam in the third term. As long as the timetables are compatible I think you can chose modules from any other department.

Mostly I do enjoy the course but as with any course at any university there are aspects I don't like too much. For me that's seminars but everyone's different. The course isn't hard as such but it involves a lot more independent study than at A Level - you have to read a lot more for essays and seminars. At A Level I got by without having to work too much and you can't do that here. But then that's almost certainly the same everywhere.

I do like Durham. It's very pretty with the cathedral and the castle - especially in the sun and at night when they're lit up. My only complaint is that it is hilly - you will definitely get fit here! The History department are friendly on the whole and you get the feeling that you're being taught by people who really know their stuff.

I hope this is of some help! Ask again if you want anymore info/clarification.
