Explain how in electrolysis of aqueous solutions water molecules break down producing hydrogen ions and hydroxide ions that are discharged.

Aqueous means the solution is dissolved in water. Electrolysis is the breaking down of substances with electricity. Electric current passes through solution with water and breaks down H20 into H+ and OH- ions as well ions of the other compound
