Because it produces genetic variation is one reason.. Introduces natural selection so offspring may have advantageous alleles (survival of the fittest) or they may not (so the less advantageous alleles are likely to die out). That's all I can really think of off the top of my head.

In Meiois, crossing over and independent assortment takes place on the chromosomes, this gives many different combinations. This leads to genetic variation and a big gene pool. The offspring are also genetically different due to this variation
