China said on Wednesday it won a pledge from North Korean leader Kim Jong Un to denuclearize the Korean peninsula during a meeting with President Xi Jinping, who pledged in return that China would uphold its friendship with its isolated neighbor.

After two days of speculation, China announced on Wednesday that Kim had visited Beijing and met Xi during what the official Xinhua news agency called an unofficial visit from Sunday to Wednesday. The trip was Kim's first known journey abroad since he assumed power in 2011 and is believed by analysts to serve as preparation for upcoming summits with South Korea and the United States.

Well this is a huge step if they actually go through with it so it would only be right for them to get most of the sanctions lifted while keeping in place any sanctions laid down for their human rights abuses.

it certainly offers a brighter future for this wretched country than becoming a smoldering pile of radioactive waste.

NK then becomes irrelevant, so am not sure he wants to fade into obscurity.. I remain sceptical.

"The issue of denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula can be resolved, if South Korea and the United States respond to our efforts with goodwill, create an atmosphere of peace and stability while taking progressive and synchronous measures for the realisation of peace." - Kim Jong-un.

Now let's see if Trump steps up.

It's not a wretched country. The leader is, but not the country.

It's weird because, even if NPK is an unsafe country, it just means USA (and russia possibly) are going to be more influential becuase they wield a strong nuclear arsenal and military. Even if they don't intend to spread their ideology/culture it ends up spreading.

North Korea have Russia and China on as their neighbours, both of which have nuclear weapons. North Korea is pretty safe relatively speaking and if they give up their nuclear weapons China will stand by them and the U.S won't have any reason to want to attack.

Looks like the little man caved in to the threat of Trump, Hopefully we will see peace that no other president could get, I have always said that appeasing him (as previous presidents have done) he promises to disarm for food and stuff then a year later goes "Haha silly west ty for the free food and stuff shame I still have all these weapons factories" with trump doing this you force him to accept things on better terms.

Definitely some big steps in the right direction. Though I dont think Kim is "growing up" or anything. Economic sanctions have crippled the North Korean economy. We dont know the stats but the sanctions on them are choking them. No access to the international financial system for example has led them to using crypto instead, or launching cyber attacks on banks such as the bangladeshi bank that got robbed recently then running it through casinos...

It'd be interesting to see if the US can draw up something similar to the Iran deal. I dont think Trump is smart enough to do that though, given just how monumental a task that would be. For starters, how do we go about addressing things like the murder of kim jong nam? Is the approach to simply ignore its past and embrace change or do we treat North Korea like any other country? Do we make NK become a member state of the UN?

Pfft there isnt a hope in hell he'll give up his nukes and who can blame him?
The last countries to voluntarily give up their nuclear ambitions were invaded and destroyed. He knows full well nuclear armed states dont get invaded and thanks to Americas penchant for bombing everyone there isnt a hope in hell they'll give them up without a fight.
