I really need help with this question:

Kiara is 7 years older than Jay.
Martha is twice as old as Kiara.
The sum of their three ages is 77.

Find the ratio of Jay's age to Kiara's age to Martha's age.

Use it as 'x' and try and form an equation ie jay=x and work from there

let K,J & M be Kiara's, Jay's and Martha's ages respectively.

K = J + 7
M = 2K
M + K + J =77

Play around with these equations and see where you get.

Jay = J
Kiara = K
Martha = M
K = J+7
M = 2K= 2(J +7) = 2J +14
JM
J:J +7:2J +14
J+J+7+2J+14= 4J + 14
4J +14= 77
4J = 56
J = 14
K) 14 +7 = 21
M) 2x14 14 = 42
14 +21 +42 = 77
Answer: 14:21:42

Yeah and then it would be x+x+7+2x+14
simplify to 4x+21=77
then solve that so x=14

So Jay is 14, Kiara is 21 and Martha is 42
14:21:42
simplified down to 7:3:6

glad I'm doing foundation then lol last yr I was doing higher and i dreaded maths now I love it cuz it's much easier

Make an equation for each of their ages:
J=X
K=7+X
M=7+X x7+X
Add up how many you have then put into a simultaneous equation
If you need any more help let me know

My exact mood when i opened this paper lol, but dont worry i got you.

so the question says that Kiaria (K) is 7 years older than Jay. So by this we automatically can put this as an expression = 7 + X.
X being Jay's age.
It says that Martha is twice as old as Kiaria so that means itll be 2x(7+X), 2x of K's age. And we can just represent Jay's age as X
so we have
Kiaria= 7 + X
Martha= 2(7+X)
Jay= X

Now put all these terms into an equation to find X
so

7+X+2(7+X)+X=77 (Question says that all their ages add up to 77)

Collecting like terms and simplifiying this gives us
21+4X=77
reaarrange to make X on its own
X = 14

substitute 14 into these equations in place of X
Kiaria= 7 + X
Martha= 2(7+X)
Jay= X

K=21
M=42
J=14

You can simplify it to get JM as 7:3:6
