A Real Review

So you’re thinking about going to Edgehill University. Depending on what course you chose I can only offer my own personal experience and how it ended awfully. I have shared this post once before but this is an updated version.

I started Edgehill in 2017 excited to get through years of working as a teacher doing primary education with qts. Unfortunately the university was not what I thought it was and DOES NOT care about their students despite what is sold to you on the open day events.

[*]1. Tutors and Lecturers 2/10
[*]Don’t get me wrong I was actually one of the few who enjoyed going to lectures and listening to guest speakers. However the head of year one for primary education let’s call her E was from the start not giving me the best impression. I ended up having E as my personal tutor and APD lecturer which wasn’t good. Unfortunately during my year at Edgehill I encountered some particularly nasty individuals and despite trying to speak to E about my issue she wasn’t interested and offered no support. Fast forward a few months and I was missing classes because I didn’t want to be in the same room as these people due to my anxiety and I had started to become seriously ill. E again was not supportive and despite me telling her how bad the illness was with me desperately trying to go to each class between hospital visits it was clear that student support wasn’t there.

2 Support -1/10
I was very unlucky with my head of year and personal tutor as she was uncaring and unsupportive to a student who deserved to get it but I’d like to comment on the accommodation team too. I had to move halls due to bullying and isolation and I immediately went to the team for some support which they claim to offer at any time to students. It seemed like my bad luck just continued as they were very unsupportive and even tried to blame me for not ‘socialising enough’ which I had been unable to do due to illness which they were well aware off. I also had to report criminal damage on a miner of occasions and verbal abuse but they did not do anything about it despite the people involved being on teaching and social care courses which follows a strict code of behavioural conduct. Due to how I was treated it made me feel like it was my fault and ultimately led to me withdrawing from studies at the end of February this year because of how miserable I was.

3 Student Union 2/10
It’s honestly very poor. There are two guys that seem more like campus celebrities called [personal details removed] who seem more interested in holding down their roles to party rather than actually doing something worth while for certain students who aren’t focused on. For example, there are little to no activities for students who can’t or don’t drink. Societies are also few in number and the University only care and fund the sports societies as it makes them look good whilst other societies either have to stop running or don’t get the attention they should do.

4 Ormskirk itself 3/10
The town isn’t great. There is a new look and b and m and a Morrison’s but there really isn’t anything to do. I found myself spending a lot of money travelling to Liverpool to explore and do new exciting things because there is just nothing in Ormskirk. The nightlife is rubbish due to there being only one nightclub which shuts at 2:30am. The town sometimes reeks of manure due to it being a farming place too which really isn’t very nice.

5. Campus
The one thing I can’t really fault the university for is the beautiful campus. The duck ponds and the bridge which is lit up at night is really lovely to see each day. It has very scenic surroundings and is full of wildlife form geese and ducks to bunnies and campus cats. It could definitely do with more lights as it is very dark at night but other than that the campus is a 9/10.

Overall:

I can’t comment for other courses as I haven’t done them and perhaps I was just dealt a bad hand accommodation wise. However the support in the faculty of education I can confidently say is incredibly poor and needs to be improved dramatically. I was not the only student who found themselves needing support and guidance and as well as myself a number of people also withdrew from the course.

More importantly Bullying and sexism is also very bad on campus and is simply not dealt with the way it should be by the student union, the well-being team or tutors in the education building. You’d think paying over 9 grand a year meant you would feel safe and comfortable whilst studying 😒

There also isn’t a lot to do on campus apart from drink a lot or attend a frat house event which gets boring after one too many.

If you’re thinking of studying Primary education with qts I would recommend you look elsewhere because with E as the head of year many dropped out and I wouldn’t wish that debt and sadness on anyone. On the other hand this is just my personal opinion so I wish you the best of luck

Hi,

I'm really sorry to hear about the problems you've encountered during your time at Edge Hill. We strive to maintain a welcoming and safe environment for our students, however it's clear we did not offer the support you expected from us. We're also sorry to hear that the Students' Union did not meet your expectations. This year's 'Give it a Go' programme offered a number of non-drinking activites, such as crafts events, trips around the country and free films at The Arts Centre. We also offer a number of societies at Edge Hill, and these societies can approach the Students' Union for grants and marketing. However, we can look at improving this support.

I can record your feedback and pass this on to the various departments you've mentioned if you wish, however you're welcome to send us a private message if you'd like to make a more formal complaint with further details.

We wish you the best of luck in your future, and we hope this has not put you off your goal of becoming a primary school teacher.

I have already complained to the relevant people. Nothing was done and I have now withdrawn and gone elsewhere.

I did try the give it a go activities however it was sometimes unclear where they were being held and by the time one arrived there was a clear lack of resources and we needed up not being able to participate in whatever the activity was.

I no longer wish to be a teacher and Edgehill are solely to blame for that. There is not and never has been a safe supportive environment within the accommodation or the faculty of education and I really feel sorry for those who will be joining like I did as a first year and who will experience the same thing.

Edgehill university do not care for their students and do not offer the support they claim to on open days. I wasted a year of my life for a rubbish course and got myself into debt for nothing. I will never recommend Edgehill to anyone and I would strongly advise against going there.

I appreciate your reply but what’s done is done and I will not let others be pushed to the side like I was. You should do more for your students.

Sincerely, a disappointed undergraduate student
