I know that requirements are high, but from people who have been to Med/Vet School, are in Med/Vet School or those applying - what were your GCSE grades?

I know this subject has probably been run into the ground before, my apologies - my internet is very slow and I'm having to wait ages for the pages to load up, so I haven't got much time/patience to trawl through past threads.

7A* & 4As. GCSE grades differ quite considerably from med/vet applicants. some get 14A*s where others can have 4As 2Bs 4Cs.

9A* and 1A.. but as the previous poster says, its not all about GCSEs, unless you are an oxbridge applicant in which case anything above 5A* and 5A would be highly reccomended

Mine are pretty shite considering I want to be a vet:
3 A's, 5 B's and 1 C. I havent got a decent excuse either.. just pure laziness.

Ouch! I got 6 A's and 4B's and I'm considering applying for medicine at Oxford this year :frown:

as long as you meet the minimum requirements, it doesn't matter what you get.

There's no point worrying about whether someone got 1 more A* than you

having said that, if everything else you have done is outstanding and you think you can see yourself as a typical oxbridge student in a couple of years, then by all means continue, dont let the GCSE bit necessarily hold you back
2A*, 5A's, 4B's and one C... and im applyin for medicine!... personally i dont think they really pay much attention to GCSE's... or do they?

It depends on the university. Some of the replies that I have got have said they look for 9 B's and above, some ask for 7A's or A*'s and some have said that they don't pay much attention to your GCSE's aslong as you have predicted A2's of AAB

In my school 4 people want to medicine and i got the worst GCSE results by far!!!!
2people got 11A*-one of them with 6 top 5 letters (inc. the 3 sciences) , one person got 7A*s 1A, 1B and i got 4A*s and 7As (with one of my As in biology - i was one mark off and sum stingy examiner cudnt even find a single mark)

I really want to apply to oxbridge but... as sum1 sed 5A*s mnimum seems a gud estimate. However i go to a state school and 11 GCSEs is way more than the average there were only 3 people who did 11 (me n the 2 genii), is it worth it (please dont just say yes coz im not looking for a confidence boost just an honest opinion)

I personally don't think i have bad GCSE results but every1 else i know who wants 2b a doctor have amazing GCSE results....

being harsh & objective then..

I can only speak for Oxford - to guarantee an interview - your GCSEs are probably slightly below the average, do you think your BMAT score would be significantly above average? or that the rest of your UCAS is good enough to get you through when they sift the GCSE-BMAT borderlines?

once you're at the interview stage, it's all about potential.

but, make your mind up fast..BMAT registration deadline is 30th September.

I got 2 A*'s, 6 A's and 2 B's, however, I was led to understand that it was more important in what subjects you got what grades rather than what the grades were themselves. My careers adviser at school told me that my grades were fine but that as one of my B's was in Physics I might have trouble getting into some of the more competitive universities - who were known to prefer a minimum of an A grade for Maths, English and the sciences; and indeed I do think that this is why I never even got as far as Nottingham's questionnaire thingy. :frown:
Still got 3 offers both times round though, so they can't have been that bad

Thanks for the replies everyone

I got 3 A, 4 B and 5 C - personal circumstances made them significantly lower than what they should have been.

I can only apply to Liverpool Uni (My partner and I are buying a house in this area, so I won't be able to move across the country) so I sent them an email asking about my grades and explaining my circumstances. I got a reply saying my grades were fine but I should consider retaking my GCSE Maths (I got a C, I was predicted an A). I've now arranged to retake it in November at college. I'm also taking a GCSE in Human Physiology & Health with the hope of getting an A/B grade.

If all else fails I'm looking into doing a pre-med degree instead.

Get your paper remarked. GCSE marks cannot go down after remarking only up!

You sure about that?

I know that the CCEA board will mark you down if your remark comes out lower for GCSE, AS & A-Level.
Reply 15
yeah i agree! gcse marks can go down or up, its your decision to take the risk

They CAN go down
Reply 16
No they can only go up. They take the previous mark if it is found to go down.
Reply 17
No they can go up or down, my friend had one of her papers re-marked and it went down by one mark!
