You definitely don't need to go to University to make it big in the film industry! Simply look at some of the graduates from Bournemouth University - through their degree and the NCCA (http://www.bournemouthecho.co.uk/news/16170604.BU_graduates_receive_visual_effects_awards_in_Hollywood_for_work_on_blockbusters/) they've gone on to produce some great films/works.
I'd argue that you definitely don't need to attend a London-based University to succeed within this industry.
