The Student Room Group

What jobs a are good for making freinds,

Currently at uni but am struggling with my course so not sure if I will graduate. If I don’t what low paid - or part time as I have autism-are good for making freinds because I currently don’t really have any. I tend to get too low if I do speak to any people and the not see the message for weeks so Work would help me make freinds and avoid that issue.

Anyone please,
retail and bar work are probably the best for meeting people your age. working in your student union bar and shop would also be a good way to meet other students from your uni.

Anything where you are actively working with people and have a chance to talk. If you're not fussed about the money then you might like to try volunteering. It often has a bit more of a friendly atmosphere and quite a few people there will be doing it for similar reasons to you- because they want something to do, want to socialise etc. Some classic types of volunteering are at an animal shelter, charity shop or youth group.
You could also look into joining a club yourself.

Hope that helps.

I would suggest working in a bar 100%.

Not really sutable with my parents being very strict on me due to my autism, I wouldn’t be able to be out that late.
I would join an. CLub but can’t find any that are welcoming - meetup.com doesn’t tell you how friendly they are.

A cafe maybe? Not a busy restaurant if you would find that uncomfortable. Small cafes tend to have a calmer atmosphere and would be a good place to start and build up confidence  hope you have success in finding a new job or club!
What are youre interests? See if theres a local club or university society with something to do with it?

Job wise, Retail is good or any job where you actively work with others.

Retail is normally the easiest to get into, but can be very stressful for people with ASD as the customers can get quite abusive sometimes and you need to be able cope.Retail managers aren't the most understanding of your needs generally, and most I've known are borderline bullies. Plus all the social contact and chatter
can be really exhausting. However, if you can find a retail job that needs specialist knowledge of products, ASD can help with remembering everything, and you
can info dump.
It will depend on what your triggers / hypersensitivities are and how social you are. I personally struggle being on a shopfloor, but am fine in a warehouse
environment, so I try and look for that kind of job. Or quiet shops like DIY/gardening. There's also things like hospital portering.
At the uni itself, there's generally library assistants, campus guides, helpdesk work, student union (campaigning and support bit, rather than bar) which may all be good for you as normally part-time, in fairly quiet environments, where you should meet similarly minded people.
