I know that stratified sampling uses random sampling techniques but I don't fully understand the difference. Both seem to divide the population into categories and gather data as such, so I am confused...

A stratified sample is one that ensures all strata (group) are fairly represented as they are in the population e.g population of 30, 12 male, 18 female. Sample of 10 wanted, so you'd work out the proportion of each gender in the pop. (10/30=1/3, male=12x1/3= 4, female=18x1/3= 6) so you would randomly select 6 females and 4 males (probably using a random number table).

Whereas a quota sample is a stratified sample where the samples for each strata are chosen for convenience, e.g an interviewer will choose people easily accessible to them, for example whoever walks into a building first
