Graph Transformations

When transforming graphs ie. from y=x to y = 3(2x-1)+6 , do you move then stretch, or stretch then move. ie in the x direction, do you move right 1 then stretch by 1/2 , or do you stretch by 1/2 then move by 1?

You can do either order, but the actual quantity of the transformation is not the same between the two orders.

For example, going from y=xy=x to y=5x3y=5x-3 can either be done by:

(a) Translation by the vector (3,0)(3,0), followed by a stretch of s.f. 15\frac{1}{5}

or

(b) Stretch by a factor of 15\frac{1}{5}, followed by a translation by the vector (35,0)(\frac{3}{5},0)
