Why? You should only dread it if you're really camp to the point of pissing other people off.

If you're a normal acting gay then so what? Just don't shove it in the other guys faces

If you want to scream and use pink bed sheets then make some good friends in anoither flat and spend a lot of time over there.

Ok, I didn't really express myself properly. I don't intend to "shove it in their faces", die my sheets pink or scream, and I don't think people would point me out as obviously gay. At the same time though, I'm not blokey. At all. Not that I'm really girly either - I just fit in so much better in mixed groups. What I'm concerned about isn't so much being rejected for being gay but being rejected for not being really really macho. What is the group dynamic usually like? Do people of both sexes go out etc together? Thanks for anything you can tell me.

Unless the situation has changed from last year, there are plenty of mixed sex flats here. I'm in one. All you have to do is specify on your accommodation form that you want a mixed sex flat.

I've firmly accepted my offer there but I had no idea I'd be living in single sex accomodation and to be honest I'm really, really dreading it. So much so that I'm considering going to the trouble of going to my insurance choice if possible. Is there anything you can tell me about it?

Make it clear in your application what your situation is and that you absolutely want to have mixed accommodation.

If they decide to ignore it, phone them up and explain the situation to them again.

If that doesn't help, reject the accommodation offer and go for private halls such as Victoria.

Hey,
Normally it isn't too difficult changing to a mixed, I was placed in my first set of halls which was single sex and ended up ringing accomodation to see if I could change the place I was allocated, and was asked which type of flat I wanted - mixed or single. I think they are normally pretty laid back about it. If you give them a call I'm sure they wouldn't mind making a note of it - and just make sure on your application you specify - or have you already had your offer? Either way get on the phone to accom and let them know!
On the whole tho you will get a mixed pot of people whereever you go and people will accept gay people differently - mixed or not. I know a gay guy in a single sex flat who is a great guy ! But his flat dynamics just dont suit him - so he has a mixed group he hangs around with on his course.
At the end of the day whereever you are put its the luck of the draw! And if the flat dynamics are bad there will always be your course/societies and other events where you can get to know like-minded people but hopefully you will end up with an awesome bunch of people

Thanks, that's all really helpful. Will all halls have mixed sex flats? I wanted to apply to Tennis Court and by chance know someone who went there. She didn't think there were any mixed sex flats there and also had the impression that flats are single-sex university wide. Can anyone confirm there (not) being mixed flats in Tennis Court?

Stop worrying, no one will care that you're gay. You'll mix with all the flats around you and yeah both sexes mix & go out together...

Here's what my life has told me: No one gives a damn what sexual orientation you are. People only care if you shove it in their faces all day long, just as they would get pissed off with you if you kept pestering them about the advantages of ecological agricultural.

If you don't make it a big deal, no one else will.

There are definitely mixed sex flats at Tennis Courts this year - one of my best friends lives in one.
