Which method of numbering is correct? - do I prioritise a lower number for the double bond over lower overall numbers (lower side chain numbers in this example)
2-methylhept-3,5-diene or 6-methylhept-2,4-diene
Please help - which one should be used and why in this case, thanks...

lower number of double bond is what you prioritise because they are the most important functional group in that compound so 6-methylhept-2,4-diene.
