Hello,
Long story short I've missed ALL of Othello and was wondering what the best way was to revise it at A level?

It is a closed book exam so now I'm worrying...

I had gone over the first part of it in class but not anything after the first few scenes which I have kind of forgotten now...

But, today I have gone through Act 1 scene 1 and know most of the key quotes and themes by memory which I will go over regularly! I did this in approx under 2 hours which is kind of long but I know I could have done it in 1 hour but was teaching my sister's which helped me!
Should I have done more today?
Is doing only act 1 scene 1 too little to do???


Any tips on how I should revise?
Where to begin revising from?

I really want to get the best possible grades in my mocks so need all the advice possible!

I really don't understand WHERE to start nor how to memorise certain things that are needed in the essays.
HOW do I memorise things such as ephitets and other key things and add it in when I have not been taught it nor will be...

Any sample answers?
Any tips on WHAT types of things I need to revise...?
I am both a visual learner and auditory.

I really want to get the best possible grades in my mocks so need all the advice possible!

Hello fellow English Lit student,
I have just finished being taught Othello for A-level and AS level so I hope I can be of some help.

The way my teacher suggested to study is to not focus on specific acts and scenes but rather specific themes and characters.

We were told to find quotations to learn that can be used under multiple themes so that we reduce the quantity of quotations we have, meaning we are able to create deeper analysis on them and have alternative views.

My method for revising is to use the structure of a mind map. I would put the quotation in the centre of a page and then annotate it, identifying the techniques, context, themes, connotations and denotations.

I also do as many practise questions as I can in order to improve the sturcture of my essays and my time-keeping considering the horrendous amount of time given in the exams.

Watching videos about the play online and film/play adaptations also has helped me during my revising process.

I hope this somewhat helps and sorry it isn't much.

Yo, Im revising right now. Basically, revise like this. Find every key theme that will possibly come up, as all questions will ask, "How does shakespeare explore the theme of (X) in Othello" etc. So learn every theme. I can help name a few so you know what to look for.

e.g.
Manipulation
Women
Love
Isolation
Race

Then once you know each theme, learn context. Learn what was generally occurring around the same time - e.g. 1570 war in cyprus, or things relating to race etc. like black people would often be reduced to roles such as slavery. Or compare it to other shakespearing plays, commenting on recurring themes throughout his plays, such as love being a more destructive thing rather than a formative thing in the play and can be seen also in plays such as Romeo and Juliet.

You'll need to know quotes to back up your main points, e.g. If they ask about manipluation in Othello. Your point could be, manipulation revolves our main antagonist, Iago. Now show evidence in the play of his manipulation e.g. "Out of her own goodness I shall make the net that shall enmesh them all".

Once you feel confident about context, learn some critics. I usually make them up on the spot in exams XD they never will research for it, they only want to see critical analysis in the exam.

Next I would find all essay questions, plan how you can answer them, (I try to find three points) and practice/ plan the essay including everything I've said. You will then learn as you go along. I did this at the top of my head simply as I've practiced it a lot, and still have a LOT to do.

I was thinking should I even 'read' each act/scene? Can't I just read the summaries and look for quotes for characters, themes, language etc online?
What do you think?

BUT, a lot of the scene-by-scene thematic quotes overlap (Sex & racism for example) so how do i memorize or revise them properly???

If i do mindmaps A LOT of the information is copied onto the other theme etc so HOW should i revise then?

I generally pick them up as im working through the book, so any question I generally know at the top pf my head. Usually most of the important quatations can be manipulated to apply to every theme. So find pages with "important" qutotations and practcice applying to all questions.
