Hey ppl, im in yr 10 but I totally feel for yr 11's. Im going to be in that position soon enough anyway. I thought I should share this technique my english teacher taught us for language paper 1 q3. The ' How does the writer create/build an idea/mood/tone' question.

Before, teachers told us to write 3 paragraphs (two for lang, one for structure or something) but this way might save time since you only have to write 2.
P.E.Z.E (Point, Evidence, Zoom, Effect)

Point : name one language technique (adverbs, verbs, adjectives, nouns - something that can quite easily be spotted) .look at that sentence as a whole and spot a structure technique in that sentence (sentence length i.e simple/compound/complex or sentence type i.e declarative/interrogative/imperative or punctuation)

Evidence: Quote 3 examples of said language technique. I personally wouldn't refer to structure at this stage.

Zoom: Choose one of the quotes

Effect: What idea does it create (e.g that the room is smelly, that someone is unhappy, the class is boring, that the teacher is upset)? Then say how the structure helps this (simple sentences convey single ideas, idk really how to analyse structure so I just waffle).

An example that I kinda made up on the spot:
How does the writer use language and structure to create suspense? (6 marks)

The verbs and sentence type creates suspense. The verbs used are: 'panting', 'kneeling' and 'grimacing'. The verb 'grimacing' suggests that the boy is in pain, and the fact that this idea is communicated in a declarative sentence reinforces this. This creates suspense because the reader does not know how the boy got hurt.

Then you do one more of this type of paragraph and that should get full marks for this question!

Tip: For the language points, choose : adjectives, adverbs, nouns, verbs because ALL texts would have them so quickest and easiest to find 3 examples of these compared to metaphors/similes. Just maybe describe them as striking/evocative/powerful in your answer to jazz it up.
