Hi,

was just doing a C4 paper and got stuck on the integration question.
I watched examsolutions and he used binomial expansion????

I spent ages on that question and had to give up in the end and I've never considered using binomial expansion before.

My question is: can i use binomial expansion when integrating anything in that form an dare there certain questions where i should recognise to use binomial expansion?

Thanks!

Actually we only use binomial expansion for other purposes like finding limits and stuff but I never knew you can use it for integration!!!
And also u can do this one by using just substitution.

When you have a positive integer exponent, the binomial expansion is just the same as multiplying out the brackets, so yes it's usable in any context where you might do that.

I would't go looking for it particularly; for integrals - just be aware of it. For high exponents, in all likelihood there will be simpler methods e.g. \int x(1+x^2)^9 can be done simply via a substitution, or even recognition.
