directly proportional means that as X doubles, Y doubles (they go up by the same ratio) but proportional means that they both go up but not by the same ratio; X could double but Y would quadruple.

So if X = Y^2 you would say they're proportional?

Does this relate to the graph? I think I remember hearing that if it goes through the origin then it's proportional

X=Y² would be proportional, yeah because it goes through the origin so both statements are true there
