Cranfield University vs University of Bath vs Uni. of Leeds(MSc in Automotive Eng.)

Hello,
I got offer for MSc in Automotive Engineering from University of Leeds, Univeristy of Bath and Cranfield Univeristy. How is research environment in Msc automotive engineering in these universities? I am not in favor of doing a job after MS rather favor doing a phd after MSc. Also , I am not interested towards power-train rather in Vehicle dynamics. Considering these , which one of the above provide best lab opportunities?
Thanks in Advance!!

An MSc is a taught program so wherever you go you will spend most of your time being taught rather than in the lab. You can find out more about teaching methods online.

Hello:smile:,

Congratulations on the MSc offers you have received from what are all top Universities. I'll try and answer your question in relation to your expectations, post-MSc. I am currently completing my PhD here at Cranfield and I have attended a "taught" MSc module at one point; basically what I engage in, everyday, is research.

First, like the comment above mentioned, your MSc is likely to be a Taught MSc; hence you are going to spend most of your time being taught, in any taught MSc at any University. Cranfield is a postgraduate-only institution, the only kind of its type in the UK; hence while you are engaged in your taught MSc, you will have an active and visible interaction with research- there are PhD researchers you may work with; your MSc supervisors will probably have PhD students who he supervises and he/she will likely be working on journal papers; the industry links with Cranfield and your supervisor would mean that your supervisor may likely have a research he/she is undertaking for a company. If you have the right skill or indicate interest, you are likely to be involved in something, at the very least. I have seen MScs work on journal papers here at Cranfield and who then continue at Cranfield on a PhD. The vital parts of research- framing a research top, building the aim and objectives and designing a workable methodology will be taught to you:smile:.

Hence, for research, there are opportunities. You just have to take hold of them when they come.

I am guessing you have seen the details of the course in the website, https://www.cranfield.ac.uk/courses/taught/automotive-engineering. You will have support from the Advanced Vehicle Engineering Centre [https://www.cranfield.ac.uk/centres/advanced-vehicle-engineering-centre] the Crash Impact Centre [https://www.cranfield.ac.uk/facilities/cranfield-impact-centre], the Integrated Vehicle Health Management Centre [https://www.cranfield.ac.uk/centres/throughlife-engineering-services-institute/integrated-vehicle-health-management-ivhm-centre] and other centers and labs which you may need depending on your area of interest. They are manned by specialists (some who will lecture you) and they can help in guiding you towards a PhD after your MSc.

I hope this helps! Any more information, please let me know:smile:.

Kind Regards,
Cranfield TSR Rep.

Presumably you looked at those aspects before you decided to apply for those courses? What made you choose those three? Which did you like the best? Have you visited any of the unis?
