Is Jack Wills a racist company?

I was browsing a Jack Wills catalogue that was lying around in my school's common room, and noticed that every single photograph included in the brochure featured white people.

I personally don't think positive discrimination helps all the time, and wouldn't encourage employment of ethnic minorities for the sake of being an ethnic minority, but with the sheer amount of photographs and ''lifestyle shots'' in this catalogue, the absense of anybody non-white was striking, and stood out a lot.

I have a couple of friends who work at Jack Wills shops in York and London, both of whom are incredibly snobbish about who shops there; a sentiment echoed by many employees, apparantly.

So is Jack Wills implicitly racist?

Hmmmmmmm... tough question really.

I mean, I don't doubt that when they aim their clothing at a market, ethnic minorities don't enter their heads once. Does this make them racist, I honestly am not sure.

They certainly aren't accepting or broad.

I doubt it is their aim to be racist, but their target market is private school, preppy kids and, since I go to a private school, I can safely say that there are not that many black people there and black people do not make up a very large part of their target market. That said, even though I do go to a private school I hate Jack Wills with a passions and would not be seen dead wearing it...

just having white people in the catologue i agree is different these days. however i think in some ways it good because every company seems the need to have people from different ethnic background just to look like they are not racist. Jack wills clearly knows who there market is and are just showing it in their catalouge (sp) jack wills is a snobby white middle class company in my opinion therefore thats what their pictures are of.

Really, even considering the term "racist" here is an insult to everyone who is really fighting for equal rights and opportunities. Non-white people being "underrepresented" in a fashion catalogue is a non-problem that one should start thinking about when the educational system and many other structures have changed so that your future life won't depend on your parents' income anymore.

No, of course not...

Are you familiar with this episode of south park?
I wouldn't say it's something exclusive to Jack Wills. I can't remember the last time I saw someone of an ethnic background on a Topshop strut card/poster/whatever you want to call it. Same with Oasis, I've worked there for almost 2 years and all the girls on our strut cards have been white. You could probably carry this along to a lot of fashion retailers.

Jack Wills clothing is almost entirely bought by white people. Similarly, clothes aimed at a target black market will largely feature black people in their catalogues.

Perhaps, but that's never going to forward social cohesion.
I've never even heard of Jack Wills before now... Is it like a British Abercrombie then?

Something like 6% of the population is an ethnic minority. Hence, only 6% of models in the catalogue should be of an ethnic minority; no more, no less. Although I doubt that you'd call it racism if you had none in there - this is a white, Christian country after all ().

But meh, it's not racist. Just... appealing to target base, I suppose.

Edit : I'd be more worried about the influence their models have over teenagers. From their message board

weight..

hello darlings, just wondering if i could ask you something! how much does everyone weigh? sorry if its too personal a question - but its just that im REALLY heavy and im only 14! i do tons of sport and am not fat at all (but am fairly tall), but i just feel really uncomfortable knowing that all my friends weigh like 1/2 stone less that me! x

You're not far off with that post I think. However, when you think about the type of company it is, it's easy to be led elsewhere.

Well it certainly goes against this: http://www.thebestpageintheuniverse.net/c.cgi?u=stock_photos

But who cares, stop being too politically correct.. they can choose who they want to model their clothing. Its not like there's restrictions on who can buy it.
