Quote from the UCL music society:

The music society is one of the oldest and largest at UCL and is open to anyone within the University with an interest in music. Its aims are to provide as many people as possible with the opportunity to get involved in music performance and to encourage the appreciation of music. The society runs four ensembles: the Symphony Orchestra and Chamber Choir, which are auditioned, and the Symphony Chorus and Concert Band, which are open to anyone whatever their standard. We also maintain a mailing list for anybody who wishes to hear music rather than be a playing member.

Well, that looks pretty good! Looks good, although I'm not sure I'll ever get through a UCL symphony orchestra audition, which is a shame!

The Symphony Orchestra looks daunting to say the least!
If I end up at UCL I think I'd just go for the Concert Band - having looked at the SO list they only have 3 Flautists (One of whom is for Picc.) can't see myself being in the top 3 at UCL somehow!

There are 29 violinists, but I still don't feel optimistic! I'm a little annoyed that there appears to be nowhere for not-symphony-orchestra-standard violinists to play!

Ah well, I'll have to content myself with the Symphony Chorus.

lol!!! thanx 4 answering everyone!!!! i was just wondering coz my top two choices are ucl and kings college, and its going to be hard 2 choose between them, so as i love music i thought that would be a extra thing on my pros and cons list. I heard that kings is second for music though!!!

Yeah, I'm trying to choose between Durham and UCL; the UCOPERA certainly swings it in UCL's favour!

Hey, are there any open mic nights, or rock bands as such? xx

Yeah ditto that, I sing in bands and bars at the moment and I want to be able to find a new band pretty quick if I get into UCL and go to London to get back on the gigging bandwagon...
Well we run Jazz Jamming every Tuesday in the Union, which is effectively an open mic night. Anyone is welcome to come and it's totally free. We're very liberal with what sort of music can be played - just so long as it's not like death metal or hardcore trance :p:

There are many rock bands at UCL (some ex-UCL student bands have become quite well known, such as Coldplay and Keane) - we just had our battle of the bands competition and a few of the best bands are now off to compete in the University of London battle of the bands.

Besides the Jazz Society and the classically-oriented Music Society there are a few other music societies which you might be interested in - Musical Society (though as the name suggests they're more into musicals than small band performance) and the Live Music Society is basically a society where musicians can meet up and start their own ensembles.

Out of interest what style of singing do you do, lily_blue?

This and that, pretty much acoustic rock stuff if it's just little ol' me and a guitar, or, er, less acoustic stuff if I'm with a band - anything alanis morrisette-y to blues to jazz. Lots really

You sound musical, what do you do?
Oh awesome  Well if I'm accepted onto the masters programme at UCL then I'll see you next year hopefully!

I'm the musical director and sports captain of the jazz society (yes, we do sports :p: we have a dodgeball tournament on wednesday!). I play trumpet in the big band and bass guitar in a couple of bands. I usually play at the jamming on tuesdays. I also dabble in the music society playing for their concert band. Oh yeah and I sing badly and drunkenly at karaokes lol. It's all great fun

If you want, you can also get involved on the production side of shows. I musically directed a show in the bloomsbury theatre this year and it was so much fun!

Mmm I'm looking forward to the Tuesday jam night. I need some musical fix now my band has split up. Definitely hoping to get in some band at uni, preferably some funky rock outfit
Ah, another opportunity to plug the jazz society! We're doing a funk show next term  What do you play? I hope you don't play bass too :p:

one of the reasons why I am favouring UCL over my other choices  I don't like Keane much though.

and it's cool that UCL has such a vibrant musical scene  I'd love to be able to perform in a band but my skill/talent is lacking :frown:
