Active transport is the movement of dissolved solutes across a membrane against a concentration gradient (moving from low to high concentration)

Osmosis is the movement of water down a concentration gradient (from high to low concentration) across a partially permeable membrane.

1. Active transport is the movement of dissolved solutes and osmosis is the movement of water.

2. Active transport is the movement against the concentration gradient and osmosis is the movement down the concentration gradient

3. Active transport is movement from from low to high and osmosis is the movement from high to low

4. Active transport is movement across a membrane and osmosis is movement across a partially permeable membrane

Active transport requires protein carriers to move molecules against a concentration gradient, from an area of low concentration to an area of high concentration.

Osmosis involves water molecules moving down a concentration gradient, from an area of high water concentration (high water potential) to an area of low water concentration (low water potential).

Active transport requires energy from cell respiration to move molecules against the concentration gradient.

Osmosis does not require energy for the water molecules to move down the concentration gradient.

In active transport the molecules move through a selectively permeable membrane.

In osmosis the water molecules move through a semi-permeable membrane.
