Me & My Ears - Advise please!

Hi everyone

I have perticulary 'sticky outy ears' and have been thinking, especially recently, about getting an operation to get them closer to my head (I beleive this process is called otoplasty)

I have never been very confident, especially with my looks in general. I mostly put this down to the fact I was bullied pretty badly at school. And although I am 19 now and am no longer bullied, I still always think negitivly about myself and my looks, especially my ears which I am really paranoid about.

I go through phases, One moment i will think it would be a good idea to get an operation done because It will boost my confidence with myself, and then a week later I will be thinking "Dont be so stupid, you dont need it and nobody is taking the p*ss out of you any more, they arnt THAT big!".

Has anyone else had this operation done for similar reasons? Anyone had it done and regreted it? Worth the money?

Cheers in advance, dont mean to sound like a moaner but I really need other views on the situation!

You look fine, don't worry about it.

You know what they say about guys with big ears anyway

as above said, you look fine. i'd only have something done about it if it was really affecting your self-confidence in that it was stopping you doing things. your ears are a characteristic of you, i imagine you'd look very different with them any other way!
Yeah, was a kid at school they used to call "the FA cup"... think he had it done.

I have really badly sticky out ears too - they arent over sized or anything, just stick out a HELL of a lot.

Luckily im a girl and i can hide them behind my hair, but when i was in secondary school and had to put my hair up for pe, after swimming, dt etc my ears were clearly visible and thats when the bullying was worst.

Even though no one bullies me anymore i know how you feel about still feeling subconcious even though people don't bully you for it anymore.

As for the operation, a few years ago I went for a consultation and basically was put off by all the risks, for example there could be serious scarring, they might look uneven, it can often be obvious that people have had the surgery etc. I kind of panicked and thought it wasnt really worth it. Especially as I'm terrified of anasthetic, and realised I would have to be put under general anasthetic.

I was called 'radar ears', 'elephant' and stuff like that for years.
I think it makes you stronger when you come out the other side of it, and it gets to the point where you just think the other people are pathetic for making you feel that bad.
Obleu

Oh my God, that is a brilliant name. Kind of.

OP: I'd say it was worth it. My sister had this done and, to be honest, she does look better. She feels a lot better too. I don't think the operation comes with much risk; just a bit of pain and an unflattering bandage for the first couple of weeks.
are they this bad?

Spoiler

seriously though, it's probably more linked to your self confidence. I think my ears stick out a lot but that's just the way some people's are.

edit: just looked at your pic and they're really not that bad. You'd look a bit different if they were pinned back but I think they suit you.

haha yeah I got all of that, the taunts are really pathetic when you think about it... But it does still affect you despite how lame the insults are.

I might just do what you did and go and see a consultant, see what he has to say and take it from there. Not gonna jump into anything that I might end up regretting.

Big ear muffs?
Dude, you're a handsome guy. School kids can be harsh, but hopefully they'll have all grown out of it. Also, karma, just wait. :P

I think it looks fine it took a while for me to work out what pic you were on about LOL! I couldn't see a problem with it. Your friends and family obviously don't think anything of it and it's just part of how you look. But, if your sure the operation will make you feel better I don't see why you shouldn't go through with it, it's entirely up to you.

ive just had otoplasty surgery (yesterday actually lol). its a routine operation and is done in an hour and i went home the same day. there are risks like with every operation but they are really minimal like 5% chance of anythin goin wrong/infection, etc. my operation went well but afterwards my ears sore, got hardly any sleep last night and it still hurts now. thats meant to happen though, it should be fine in a couple of days. then i get my bandage taken off 5 days after the operation and will have to wear a headband for a while. in my opinion, if you're not happy with somethin and you can do somethin about it, then why not?
