For starters southampton is a city and significantly bigger.
i would have thought Southampton is a fair bit rougher than Bournemouth.

Bournemouth would have a lot of stag-night/hen-night/tourist type crowd whereas Southampton would be mostly locals and students?

im not 100% sure tbh though, maybe do a bit of recconaissance on both? (fun type reconnaisance that involves nights out lol)

Howdy

I live in the new forest slap bang in between bournemouth and southampton and go to both on a fairly regular basis.

Generally as a city I prefer southampton, Shopping is a lot better there than bournemouth, all the good shops are close together and west quay is there which is a pretty massive shopping centre.

The shops in bournemouth are really spread out, like everything else in the town. Although I would say the main advantage of bournemouth is that it is a lot less 'city like' there is a nice big landscaped park in the centre of town where all the students go to laze about in the summer.

Southampton has some really rough areas which I wouldnt go anywhere near when the sun goes down. I would feel a lot safer walking through bournemouth at night than I would in southampton.

As far as clubbing is concerned Id say they are pretty much on par. Bournemouth's clubs, like the shops, are fairly spread out but If you dont mind a walk between clubs then there are quite a few good clubs, especially in the summer when the city really starts to get busy (It a a tourist town after all).

Southamptons clubs are a lot closer together so not so much walking around. But both the cities have a similar range of clubs. I tend to go to southampton more for gigs and clubbing more in bournemouth... dunno why, Just seem to have had better nights out in bournemouth. There is also a lot more smaller 'bars' to go to if you dont feel like a really messy night and just feel like a quiet drink.

So for shopping, transport, gigs and things like cinema etc I would go for southampton.

For clubbing, and having more of a studenty vibe I would go for bournemouth.

southamptons clubs are not closer together...bournemouth is known for having the most clubs concentrated in one area in the country

southampton isnt significantly bigger either just because it has a city status

is salisbury bigger than reading?

yes, southampton is bigger than just bouremouth but when you look at bournemouth and poole its smaller

also two people just got killed in bournemouth in the same night...i dont know how rough southampton is but to assume bournemouth isnt at certain times and places would be wrong

I have to choose between Bournemouth & Soton also as 2 of my 3 choices. I'm kinda swayed towards Soton at the moment. Bournemouyth might just edge it on nightlife from what i have read but that does'nt mean Soton has none at all. Plus i think Soton will be more better as a town to live is as from what i have heard Bournemouth has alot of tourists and people or retirement age lets say residing there!

the blue rinse brigade are dead and gone...that stereotype doesnt fit to what bournmeouth is really like anymore...plus theres only really tourists in the summer as its a seaside town and your not in uni over the summer anyway
old people dont retire to British seaside towns anymore anyway surely, they retire to Spain for better weather at half the property cost.

i would have thought Southampton is a fair bit rougher than Bournemouth.

well I've never seen a gang of 10 lads throwing chairs at people and kicking off in the street at 2pm on a saturday in southampton, I've seen it happen twice in bournemouth....

Bournemouth would have a lot of stag-night/hen-night/tourist type crowd whereas Southampton would be mostly locals and students?

absolutely spot on

(speaking as someone who has lived in the 2 places for the last 10 years:smile:)
southhampton..clearly!
Continue....I'm interested in Bournemouth
Southampton is better
As it is has two Universities they cater for students so much
Hundreds of student nights, cheap booze/events and so many new people to get to know from both Unis
I'm probably going to Soton Solent

Unless you like the seaside, go to Southampton. Better shopping, better nightlife, better University, better city.
in bournemouth you don't have to walk more then 5 mins to get to the next club. its very expensive but you always find you've been to no less then 3 places and always have had a good night. the clubs are full of young people and students - not tourists.
shops aren't spread out at all, again - you can be anywhere within 10 mins in the centre. there's a good choice of shops its just really concentrated and if you want to go on a big shop its £5 return ticket on the train to soton for shopping (or 30 mins drive)

southampton is rougher then bournemouth, i wouldn't say it was that much bigger, though.
Poole, which is about a 15 min drive or 30 min bus journey from bournemouth has a shopping centre also and a town centre, again pretty much the same kind of thing as bournemouth (although if you want primark you have to go to poole!)

bournemouth has a beach which is great in the summer  bbqs on the promanade and theres always something going on on the pier approach.

as someone mentioned there's the gardens which is cool to just get a deck chair and laze about with some mates and do some people watching.

"also two people just got killed in bournemouth in the same night...i dont know how rough southampton is but to assume bournemouth isnt at certain times and places would be wrong"

one of these people was a close friend of mine and on the 24th of feb this incident was exactly a year ago, i can assure you, incidents like this are a rare occurance in bournemouth. that's not to say it doesn't happen however.

personally, i wouldn't want to live in southampton, apart from the shopping i find it dull, full of pikeys and nothing much going on.

can anyone tell i'm biased towards bournemouth

Expect bingo halls and stag nights in Bournemouth. Slight over exaggeration, but you get the idea.

Lots of people I know from Soton go to Bournemouth for clubbing. Apart from that I guess soton has better shops.
