Transferring into second year

Until April this year, I was studying English Literature at the University of Surrey. I dropped out during the second semester of my second year because I had been really suffering with depression while at university, and it got so much worse in my second year.

I am going back to university in September but will be starting second year from scratch at UEA. I am really excited for this move and I know it was the right decision. However, it is a move and I am slightly apprehensive.

I was just wondering if anyone here had any experience of transferring to a different university. I am interested to know how it has worked for you and how you feel about your decision in retrospect.

Thanks in advance guys!

Well done for transferring.
Make sure you have the mental health under control.
The only things I would point out is that you need to be determined and not put off that by second year then many groups have formed.

Focus on being able to socialise and working your way into an existing group or joining societies where you can build up your social network. Do not let it set you back or get overwhelmed if its difficult.

Presumably you did go to open days plus you feel UEA is a better environment for you?

Hi there!

Interestingly enough, I did exactly the same as you!

After finishing my first year, I knew that I wasn't in the right place and felt that UEA was a much better place for me - so I transferred straight into my second year and was able to hit the ground running. Like you I was also apprehensive about going to a new place all over again, but I settled in just fine like I hoped I would :h:

The thing that really helped me feel settled and part of a community at UEA was joining a sports team. The clubs and societies at UEA are given lots of support by the student's union, meaning they are run well and can fund some great experiences for their members. I thoroughly recommend getting involved in a club or society if you can - check out the many options here!

In retrospect, it was definitely a good decision to transfer here - so much so that I'm now studying a Master's degree here!

Best of luck for your time at UEA!
