“Oxbridge hegemony will end,” says head.

Will it ever be?
Thoughts?

He said: “Parents and pupils do tend to see those universities after all, they have their own term, Oxbridge as being apart, in a league of their own. I think that can be very harmful to young people’s self-perceptions and to parents’ aspirations.”

London universities are breaking up the traditional dominance of Oxford and Cambridge, according to official figures on research excellence.

That would just put this so-called division slightly further down the league tables. Maybe when I was 12 or something I would have thought that Oxford and Cambridge were in a league of their own, but I don't think that now, now that I've looked at other top unis and realised that the course should be my main priority.

I mean, they are top 10 worldwide universities for most if not all their subjects and consistently rank 2nd or 1st in UK league rankings. People getting angry that the best universities are being perceived as the best are the same people who moan when their kids don't get a participation trophy.
I'd rather Oxbridge be ten times as unattainable to get into, even if that means I would never have an offer, than let it lose "hegemony". The best institutions are the best for a reason. - They should only aim to take in the best.

2013 Telegraph article and 2014 BBC article.

Yes LSE topped that particular measure in the BBC piece but with a *much* smaller quantity of research.
Cambridge Endowment : 6.25 Billion+
Oxford Endowment: 5 Billion +

3rd Place is Edinburgh with an Endowment of nearly 400m so a like 8% that of Oxford.

I'd say their dominance is not over.

I think people generally conflate three things:

1. The idea that everyone should aspire or want to go there
2. The idea that if you are rejected or don't apply, you are automatically dumb and/or a failure or the mentality that causes a lot of self-shame in this respect
3. The idea that they are valued as institutions in their own right and have a prestige for the quality of work and education they instil (producing an overall benefit to society)

Obviously, the third aspect is great and it should continue. Recognising great things is a good thing. And the third aspect doesn't negatively impact the other 2.

People should go where they want and do what they want and employers should always be keen to get a diverse as possible employment (eg from different backgrounds and unis, those who didn't go to uni, BME, disabled etc) because diversity in employment tends to generate a better working environment and it means more people have a chance (who wouldn't otherwise) at better or more worthwhile jobs. No one should, on an individual level, be pressured into doing something.

But on a wider level, it's ok to admit that something has a higher standard in xyz areas, sometimes it even helps other unis (Durham's music department and eventual ranking/teaching quality, for example, benefited massively from the efforts of one professor from the Oxford compositional department).

MIT and Harvard's endowment has an even bigger gap, yet many consider Oxbridge on par with them? You may also wish to consider budget, which also provides funds for the university

In my opinion, if you consider a few hundred years time (long I know) where the population will be much larger, the offer rates so small that getting into any top university will be hard and the age % difference becoming smaller, then I certainly think the gap will close.

Many other universities are already producing research in areas rivalling or bettering Oxbridge, though I answered your question with regards to undergrad

But if you want to consider a more realistic viewpoint..

I think online learning will take over, and I think the top brands will try to capitalise - it'll be interesting to see what happens

Not as much as your big, green, gem-like willy

Why are you posting 4-5 year old articles just for a clickbait title? Not much has changed since then. Oxbridge is still at the top, and a select few universities (notably Imperial/LSE/arguably Durham) come close for a select few courses.
