University of York, Liverpool vs Strathclyde

Hi,
I have offers from the following three institutions in the following programs.

University of Liverpool (MSc Operations & Supply Chain)
University of Strathclyde (MSc Supply Chain & Logistics + MSc Marketing & Innovation)
University of York (MSc International Management & Innovation Management)

Strathclyde has relatively the lowest international ranking but the management school has ALL THREE major accreditation. Whereas, York has none of them yet it is the highest ranked. Liverpool has a modest reputation with an accreditation as well.

I am going to be an international student so I am now a bit confused. Which university and the city do you guys suggest for me; for career building and a reasonable social life. I may also want to work for an year after my graduation before I return to my home country.

I wouldn't describe Liverpool's reputation as 'modest' haha 😆 it's the same as York's

Hi @AfnanMir

I can’t speak to the Strathclyde experience or those particular courses, but I’m happy to share my experience of studying in both York and Liverpool.

York is a small, historic, and very picturesque city. The University of York is located a bit outside the city centre, so you’ll often need to take the bus to get into town. Housing can be tricky and relatively expensive it's a tourist-heavy area, which adds to the charm but also raises the cost of living. The city is great for restaurants, pubs, and independent shops, though the nightlife is more low-key. In my experience, many graduates tend to move elsewhere after finishing their studies, likely because of fewer job opportunities locally.

Liverpool is a larger, more contemporary city but still very walkable and full of character. It has its own historical appeal including the Albert Dock and various museums alongside a much livelier social scene. The University of Liverpool is located right in the city centre, which is super convenient. You’ll find everything you need nearby: shops, dining, nightlife, culture, and great transport links. While it offers a different atmosphere compared to York, Liverpool tends to provide more in terms of student life and graduate opportunities. In terms of safety, I’ve felt comfortable in both cities, though Liverpool does have a more visible homeless population in the city centre.

Hope this helps! Feel free to reach out if you have any other questions.

Hi AfnanMir,

Lovely to hear you're considering York.

I'll be honest, York doesn't have the worlds best nightlife, we're a bit small on that front. However, there is an awful lot else going on in the city and the uni. I moved from London three years ago and I'm more busy here than I was in London because the city is smaller and so activities are more accessible. To get a snapshot have a look at some of our societies and read about our college system.

Careerwise York has a few things in it's favour:

We're very well connected; 1 hour to Manchester, Newcastle and Leeds and 2 hours to central London.

Our Careers Service are awsome (I wish I'd had them as an undergraduate) and will help and guide you through placements, interviews, careers fairs, applications and tailored support for international students while you're at York and for as long as you want after you graduate. (Can you tell I'm a fan of theirs 😊)

York is developing, for example there's a huge civil service hub starting in the city, lots of multinational business (e.g. Nestle, Siemens, Unilever, NIKE) are either based here or have a strong presence and there are several scientific research facilites too.

Let us know if you have any other questions about York or your course,

E.
