Thinking about dropping out of my business degree to study design, is it worth it?

I'm 20 (21 in June).

I'm 2 years into a 3 year business degree that I hate and am currently failing, 2 exams to repeat and my second semester exams soon..

I'm looking at going back as a first year to study design, in particular Industrial, but I also have an interest in Interior and Fashion and Textiles.

I hope to be self employed in the future, if I was to/be able to continue with my business degree I'd specialise in Marketing with the hopes of working in Brand Image, marketing strategy, and that general side of business probably in a Design/marketing firm.

I don't know if I am better off continuing and toughing it out to try and pass my current degree or if I should cut my loses and go into an area specific to what I hope to do..

What do you think?
Should I change to Design or stick with Business?

Hi there,

Sorry to hear that you are not enjoying the business course, and that you are quite far into it. I am sure that the skills you are learning on your Businesses course can be transferred to marketing and design. Which University are you currently at? Have you got any other experience in design? Did you do any Art/Design type A-levels?

One idea is that you could finish your dress seen as you only have 1 year left, and then you do have a useful degree under your belt. But during that year, you could see if you could work part time at a Marketing Firm or Design firm so that you could build up your experience using CAD Software like Vectorworks for Interior Design or Solid Works/Rhino for Product/Industrial Design, and things like Photoshop and Indesign. Are you familiar with any of these Softwares? And during that year you could build up a portfolio. You could also look at internships for the year after.

But if you really feel like you cannot stand your course and that you are really passionate about Design then go for it. I am studying Interior Design at Hallam and I find my course really interesting. My brother studies Industrial design and my boyfriend and best friend do Product Design. They all really enjoy their degrees and we all have a similar skill set as a lot of them cross over between disciplines. Me and my boyfriend coincidentally are also starting to get interested in marketing too which involves a lot of creativity and graphics.

If you can't decide which to change to I would go speak to a tutor from each course and see if what they say suits what you thought the course was or that your interested in. Alternatively you could do an extended degree course, such as one they offer at Hallam where you spend a year with different modules on each discipline like Fashion, Product, Interior and Graphics, so you can decide which one would like to take further. And also maybe talk to your current course leader/support services about your position.

I hope that helps, let me know if you have any more questions.
