early period on birth control

I have have been taking a 24 active pills and 4 inactive pill birth control for 4 months. I have taken different brands of birth control pills but the 24-4 have worked the best. My period has been perfectly timed the past 4 months taking the 24-4 pills. This month is different though. I am supposed to start my period in three days but yesterday I started having brown discharge and today it has gotten a little heavier and more red (almost like period blood but not quite as heavy and red like blood). Has this happened to anyone before? What could be the problem making me start my period earlier than normal while still on active pills? I also have not missed a pill!!!
I have no personal experience here as I take a 21 day pill but it could be many things. Might be worth checking with your GP or nurse about this one.
