Confusion in Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde

We have to do a speaking coursework on Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, i was asked to do London in the 19th Century.

I have all the facts about London but to get up to the higher grades we need to explain the relationship between the story and London,

I have so far something along the lines of London is spooky at night, calm by day and the fog rolling over London at night gives another spooky surrounding but as of yet i can't think of anything else so any ideas welcome please

Thanks in advance
Hmm, interesting. I suppose the storyline couldn't actually take place anywhere other than London; the duality of Jekyll and Hyde reflects the duality of London: its glamour, culture, sophistication, and the savage, poverty-stricken underside that existed in the 19th century, often ignored by aristocracy. This is shown directly in Hyde's brutish acts of violence through the story, which imply his own contribution to this 'underside'.

You could also say something about the oppression of the time; sexuality and desire were repressed; the Jekyll/Hyde swap is perfectly symbolic of a seemingly refined, respectable man's inward beast; his lust, desire and power.

In what ways does Stevenson present the duality of human nature in chapters 1, 4 and 9 of Jekyll and Hyde and how does this duality reflect the concerns of the time?
