As exam season approaches Lucy Cavendish College is offering their stressed students some extra help this year. Perhaps unsurprisingly given the college name they have chosen guinea pigs (i.e CAVies) (:woo: CoolCavy)

According to Senior Tutor Jane Greatorex, “we are dedicated to promoting mental wellbeing amongst our students, and numerous studies over the years have shown the benefits of owning pets including stress-relief and getting outside to enjoy our beautiful gardens. We hope that our new cavy friends settle in quickly and help relieve any stress over the approaching period of exams.”

The names of the four guinea pigs were chosen by the students and they are Emmeline Squeakhurst, Virguinea Woolf, Ruth Bader Guineasburg and Oreo.

Meanwhile at Corpus Christi students can walk Jack, the Master's dog, to help de-stress.

Do you think this will help?

Does your university offer something similar?

Which pet would you choose?

I believe my current uni offers puppy stroking/cuddling in the summer term. During Welcome Week (Freshers' Week) in Sept, there's a petting zoo one day of the week :yep:

If they were offering kitty stroking/cuddling, I'd def be up for that "Everybody wants to be a cat..." :moon:

Oreo.....

Universities could simply break exams down into multiple days..

Especially 20 credit modules...

But the animals are a nice gesture...

My university did this instead of putting money towards the student support services. Thankfully, a lot of people saw through this little act of 'generosity'.

I mean, the cost of getting and keeping some guinea pigs, or even say dogs, is a fraction of the cost of any meaningful improvement in student support services.

For the cost of keeping a dog for a year, you'll barely be able to pay for one month worth of one support staff.

For the cost of a guinea pig you might get a couple of days.

I didn't say they used the money to run the petting zoo (it was a one day petting zoo) instead on putting it towards student support. It was, and still is, a big problem at my university and it's no secret that this was an effort to temporarily placate the complaints.

My University has the "Animal Man" come in twice per academic year, just before exam season kicks off. The company brings in a variety of animals; dogs, lizards, owls, skunks. Students are then let loose to go pick up, cuddle, get pictures with.

I don't know if it particularly helps anyone, but everyone certainly seems to enjoy stroking the semi-exotic animals

I think Guineas pigs were a good choice! They’re lap pets - So a lot more likely to sit comfortably still on your lap with some greens, which is relatively calming. Good job Cambridge!
