Maths Extended essay topic, Urgent!

Pls pls pls, its my first post here, and its really an urgent post, help pls!

I am doing my extended essay on maths, (its my second chioce, first is physics). Its already decided, no change can be made. Really urgently need to come out with a reasonable topic, i have nothing in mind at all.

My supervisor is known to be the scariest teacher in school, and he is only supervising me, no one else.

Please share some of the possible topics that you know of, or do share some links which provide some reference for me, and also, best if with sample essays!

Any information on it will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks so much people!

You're not going to get anywhere with a maths EE if you end up doing some 'recommended topic'; I would suggest you tell us which areas of mathematics your interests lie in and perhaps people could help you find a suitable topic?

actually, after thinking all night yesterday, i thought i will be really interested in something on logarithms, because i learnt logs, did logs, liked logs, but nvr know what is it for..

maybe do something on applications of logarithms in certain field, eg, mechanical engineering. would that be appropriate? enough things to write, for 4000 words?

I admire your courage. No one in our school dared to do math.

Perhaps check out the EE topics from: http://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/showthread.php?t=10948

hi there
im doing EE on math too
my topic will be investigating sth abt gambling
u can think of ur topic in daily life easily
I'm thinking about doing a Maths EE, but I really don't know where to start. I was thinking about 3D graphing of complex numbers but my teacher said it wasn't a good plan >.<
If physics was your first choice, why didn't you do physics? it's just apply maths....math EE is all about proof, it's like writing a long essay on some foreign language.

Don't worry about a scary supervisor, it's better than a supervisor who doesn't care. It's also a good thing he only supervises you, you can get all the help. My supervisor is known to be scary too, but if you don't get on their wrong side, scary teachers can be nice, and they'll help you. I was the only one doing english in the whole year so basically the whole english department was able to help me
i wanna do mine on vedic mathematics?

any suggestions

With my math EE I modeled the flight of a soccer ball 3-dimensionally. It required a lot of physics as well has HL mathematics. If you really want to incorporate physics into your EE, modeling is one way to do it. Find a physics concept your passionate about and then use the basic equations associated with it to model the situation.

On another note, a Math EE has no word requirement, although mine was roughly 3800 anyways.

i want to do my EE on Math to but i have no clue what topic

can anyone help?

number theory
graph theory
applications of differential equations
irrationality of numbers such as e, pi or root 2 and how they are calculated
discrete math
sets, relations and groups
series and differential equations
geometry
anything in math that is of interest = Anything in math
I have an odd feeling that the best EEs come from obscure topics; It is v. difficult to achieve an A in a Maths EE. My friend explored integration (difficult to describe), was taught by a great professional and only got a B. Good essay too. I recommend trying something in the daily life, requiring advanced mathematical knowledge, & showing them you explore new areas.

OMG dude..your in the same situation as i am :/
Good luck...
I am also stuck with the ee in math. Someone suggested that doing the essay on triangles would be a good idea...the triangles are used for so many things and in so many areas, definitely good for writing an extended essay (for those interested in geometry).
Could anyone suggest a calculus topic? I really like calculus but i can't seem to figure out something good enough...

I did mine on epidemiology of the flu virus. I first applied a model based on differential equations (SIR model) and then redeveloped it to include vaccinations and treatments.
My supervisor is a math EE marker (1 of 10 in the world) so I got lucky there, and now am predicted a high A from him, so evidently it is a decent topic!

My friend invesitgated RSA security systems, simply went through and proofed various concepts.
Another friend used chaos theory to make music and then analysed the notes to see if it could actually be called music.

I'd be happy to send it to you when I get my diploma if you end up doing something on epidemiology.
