Exam Resits and Overall Module Grade

So I am an American at the business school here and exam resists are a new concept to me. I recognise the exam itself is capped at 40 percent. However, does that mean that the paper I wrote for the course is still included on the overall module grade, or is my final grade after the resit a 40 for the module?
