The Student Room Group

McKinsey & Co.

I've attended a presentation done by two consultants at said firm to prospective uni students, and I really liked what they put across.
However, how likely would it be to get an internship or training contract with them if I studied History at Exeter University?
I've always liked the idea of Management Consultancy and although not studying a degree that is directly linked, I feel the skills gained by studying a rigouros subject would stand me in good stead, no?

I'm going to be honest and say not very high. McKinsey hire mostly from Oxbridge and European Universities, but this year for example, there have been hires from Bath, Bristol etc. Although a lot of people also have Masters degrees - one of the guys was an All Souls Prize Fellow at Oxford. So it's very tough.

If you are on Facebook, search for McKinsey offerees 2008 group to get a better idea. Oxbridge dominate, even though this year's number of Oxbridge BAs have decreased.

I'm going to be more honest and say near zero.

Not very high is such a positive spin on what is really, very very low.

HR is good at positive spins

Correction. See-through positive spins.

For the sake of clarity, I think HR are universally, useless.

do a masters or mphil from Oxbridge or LSE and then maybe you have more of a chance.

And if she still couldn't get a job at McKinsey after a masters? I would be pretty pissed.

Then you'd be pretty optimistic.

Sorry for another question, but its kinda related and I didn't want to start a new thread! What about History at LSE - totally unrelated degree? Or perhaps at UCL I have both offers and are choosing...

Doing PPE at Oxford doesn't gurantee McKinsey but you can't do a degree for just one company. I heard some crazy stat from some one Mckinsey only invites 90 people every year to take the test(i think its for its london office) thats nothing in comparison to applicants!!! You are still unlikely to get it to be honest. If kates interested in Management consulting (Mckinsey is more involved in Strategy Consulting) there are many other firms such as OC&C, P&A, LEK, BCG you can consider. There are many firms but the problem lies in the fact they hire VERY FEW people. I personally think it is harder to get into Strategy and top Management Consulting than nearly all banks. The likes of GS PIA and GS M&A is probably along similar lines in difficult within Investment Banking firms.

Just my views but I friends and family in a few of the above firms and departments they have given me some views as I was interested in consulting.

I don't think it's worth choosing your degree around what will get you into McKinsey because the odds are that you won't get in anyway. For what very little it's worth, when I did an Easter thing there, it was overwhelmingly Oxbridge with a couple from Bristol, Bath, Durham, Edinburgh, and UCL. I think maybe one or two from LSE and CASS and I remember one guy from Dundee. PPE was very popular but there were also people doing Languages, Physics, and Medicine so I'm not sure that degree subject is super important. Most people were on track for a first and were heavily involved in extra currics (own businesses, international-level sport etc.).

EDIT: Consultants that I spoke to ... 2 were Edinburgh, 1 Bristol, 1 Yank, 1 German, 3+ Oxbridge (1 with HBS).

Very tough to get into. I had first round interviews with BCG and McK last year. From my experiences FO IB is a LOT easier to get into.

Between them BCG,Mck and Bain might take on 30 grads a year. Maybe 5,000 apply. Im not joking.

I heard a crazy stat a few years ago where mckinsey had 50000 applicants for 50 places worldwide or something. Thats extraordinary!!!!!

to be honest i dont think its even worth all that effort.

i'd much rather face that much competition and get into a hedge fund or private equity house.
Same prestige, roughly same amount of hours and much much better pay

McKinsey has probably one of the best reps in the world for any company. It provides a brilliant platform for Private Equity which is the desired path of many Strategy Consultants. Hedge funds again are again a viable option at Mckinsey or Bain!! bain is an even better option for Financial Related industries including Hedge Funds.

I personally dont really see the point in working for the likes of McKinsey in Business Strategy (yes fahadraja, thats how you spell it ) job that makes you slog as much as IBD in a BB with pay being good but not as much as IBD. Exit ops are pretty similar, so why move to consultancy?
Kates, you might want to take a look at the likes of PwC, KPMG etc and check out there Advisory or even Strategy/Corporate Finance, it is somewhat related and your chances would be higher.

All the best!
