Modeling - Is it degrading?

I went to a show organized by one of the princes here (I live in Brunei) and he offered me a job as one of his models!

My mom is so convinced that it's degrading to call attention to your face and body, and is refusing to let me take the guy up on his offer :frown::frown::frown: I think modeling looks like great fun though, and for me it's a once in a lifetime offer as I'm too short to model professionally! This isn't the first time she's made me turn down a modeling offer, but this time I really want to do it.

So trying to gather opinions here... IS modeling degrading?

there is no right answer coz it depends on ppls opinions  but i can't see why its degrading

I think it depends in part on what/how you're modelling, I mean a Marks & Spencers model is a bit different than, say, a Victoria's Secret one.

NO, it is not degrading. If you got it, flaunt it

It's mainly modeling ethnic Malay designer outfits and evening gowns, the other models are all tribal girls! They look SO cool on stage. I so badly want to be one!

Designer names mean absolutely nothing to me I'm afraid, I think Chats makes a good point there, at the end of the day if you want to do it then don't let anybody stop you, just don't let people make you do anything you're uncomfortable with either.

Since it's late at night I'd be letting Theaman down if I didn't ask for some pictures now

I wouldn't say it is, but the restrictions that they put on you are ridiculous.

It is a lot of fun so long as you dont get an agency that will tell you to take valium and a bottle of vodka to sleep through the weekend to aviod eating. Just make sure its not a dodgey agent. My sister was a runway model until two years ago and it got her to heaps of places, Japan, Malaysia etc... but that was becuase she had a good agent.

The thing many people forget about modeling is that the model themselves is not supposed to be the focus, the focus is supposed to be in the things they are modelling, ie clothing. The models are just the clothes horses...
I don't see how modelling is at all degrading. It's fun, you feel good about yourself. Others wish they could do the same. It pays well. Far from degrading if you ask me.

Porn is a different kettle of fish.

haha When I was your age (15 I think?) I looked like a frog. I think people just eventually grow into their own faces. But thanks for the compliment!

I think modelling isn't degrading in a physical sense, physically you are rather exalted, you are up on a stage above the onlookers, you are decorated with make up and clothes. You are there with the expectation that everyone wants to imitate you.
I can understand your mother's concern that people will only value you for what you look like or represent rather than who you are and what you can contribute in a more tangible sense.
It is a bit degrading to parade yourself before others, you are at the mercy of their opinion.
But I think it's worth trying in your life but I don't think it'd be worthwhile to do as a career. I would never let my child do it or be in a beauty pageant for this reason. Good for a bit of ego and fun. I think it'd be damaging to your self-esteem and development in the long run.

There are many different types of models and modelling jobs, so it depends on what you may be doing exactly. I for one, because where I'm currently situated, will get promotional work, which is fun and not degrading most of the time. Sometimes I may get offered sportswear, but when I do, I always remember that the main focus is of course the CLOTHES, or the item you are promoting, nothing else! Even I have to remind myself I'm merely a clothes horse, for the time being.

In your situation, I know what you mean about your mum being anal etc, lol, she's saying that because she cares about you

I really don't see a problem with what you're doing currently, as if it is organised by royalty (ok, wow!), it would probably have some class added to it, ie. you would be wearing full clothes, not exactly bikinis, eh?

If you still feel it may be a little degrading (I mean, I don't, but if that's what every1 else thinks) then remember that it's only a job, you get paid for it (quite well, may I add) and there are male models too! Upon with, this is gonna sound funny - a soccer playing friend of mine is going out with!

Haha, my mate Emily who I play soccer with has a model BF

Anyway, best of luck with it, I'm sure you'll do great (and make sure you sign up to a good agency!).

no, as long as the model is doin it because they want to, not because they have to.
Nah. Remember what I always say? I wish I could do it!

I mean ... someone has to model these clothes, right? Just like someone has to clean public toilets

Go for it gal. I personally think that modelling is plain awesome. Maybe that's because of my pure vanity but I really adore being photographed =)
