I haven't been too phased about careers in past years, but now I am.
When my Dad goes, oh such and such(who's my kinda age) has just been promoted, he went off to the US for a meeting, and impressed) I get this sinking feeling in my gut, part envy, part feeling a failure. And it's funny 'cos I got plentygoing for me otherwise.

Well I quit my last job in accounts going for admin through recruitment agencies now. I'm usually cool about but just tonight for some weird reason I started to feel funny about it.

Some people's life revolves around climbing the career mountain
For others the focal point is something else

Perfect careers will come your way but it doesnt go automatically, so if you're unhappy with admin take a leap and go for a change, do something you dont have to feel 'funny' about

And if you do love it but its not getting you anywhere
Stick to it and keep your career eye open for any opportunities

Dad's are odd beings anyway

I think its always good to have a long term plan, some idea of where you want to be in 5, 10 years but at the moment you sound ok in your job so dont let other people shake your confidence. If i told you there were people who are getting jobs earning 100k a year would that make you feel bad? The reality is that there will always be someone earning more or getting a more amazing job, but what really counts its if youre happy or not, doing what you are doing.

I feel almost ashamed and guilty for lack of effort, but truth is I haven't been in a strong enough mental state for it.

dont feel bad, its not worth it. If however u feel unhappy with YOUR role and not what others are doing then by all means consider a change of direction, new career etc.

Have you ever had a 'perfect' job, a dream career, an ambition??? If so why not pursue it?

No. I just want something bearable to help support me.I want the rest of my life to be pleasurable.

You sound like the kind of guy who's been forced into climbing into these intellectual niches for the sake of pleasing other people. Your dad mentions somebody has done something, you then feel you have to sort of match that move, so to speak.

I say leave your current "social", if it can be called that, life behind and just get on with life - nobody wants to be stuck where they don't want be when they have a choice

Manchester isn't bad, good nightlife and it's cheaper than down South. I'm sure you'll find a crowd more your type up here

Well perhaps just people who are frankly a bit more English and a bit more laid back and unpretentious

Exactly, and even if you don't ever find your dream job, life shouldn't revolve around your career anyway imo.
