I've only ever been into the bookies a few times in my life, but everytime the only other people in there have been working class men, specifically old working class men.

Would people agree? Why do you think it's the case?

And you think that the Queen goes to Royal Ascot every year without wagering a few quid?

I suppose the division may be that the working classes can't afford to actually go and watch the horse-racing in person. Casinos seem to have a rather more normal class mix.

Not sure, I hate walking into local bookies to collect winnings, I get the oddest of looks. Even the staff get suspicious, so I send my dad in now

Working class? Nothing to lose, everything to gain.

It's easy to get hooked if you convince yourself that it'll bring you your "big break".

Heh, the casino in Melbourne was just FULL of people of South East Asian decent.

I think you'll find that the bookies attracts working class males. Some gamble online. Others choose the stockmarket.

Working class young males are the most impulsive and the most desperate for cash.

well teh rich just gamble in otherways, ie cut out the middle man. i remember a story about flintoff and tendulkar had a wager on who would win a series... in the end flintoff had 2 but tendulkar a ferrari or summat... summat else i heard was this russian dude(name skips me) ended up giving his biggest yatch as a prize of his wager with someone... and of couse we can suggest the James Bond scenes where they play poker with ridiculous sums of money so in the end, the rich also gamble, just not how you or i gamble

God, tell me about it. Drones just plugging away at slot machines, blackened windows, no clocks anywhere and slots to put your debit card lest you run out of money. Horrid places. Hence why I am so glad the Manchester mega-casino has been vetoed.

you cant generalise gamblers though. maybe its to do with the time of day you went. others who normally would may have been at work

Yup. They are so immoral IMO. Good on Brown. Good to see the government put a moral duty to the public above profits.

Because those with the least to loose and most to gain, tend to be working class males. I would have thought that obvious.

Yeah, you get a lot of that here too. Quite depressing watching old Oriental women playing slot machines at 2am.

That's the only attraction they hold for me nowadays. I don't like gambling in them really. Mainly because I often lose.

My boyfriend, who is from a well off, middle class family, goes to the bookies but I think it's more for something to do when boredom kicks in really. One of my housemates is constantly in the bookies and puts god knows how many bets on a day aswell as about £20 in the roulette machines. I hate going in to the bookies with them, it's such a depressing environment. I'm not for gambling myself but I will have a bet at the races though because it would seem pointless not to.

I don't understand that viewpoint. Working class males have least to lose even though they're living on closer to subsistence wages than the middle classes?
