The Student Room Group

Rooms

What are the actual rooms like at Durham? I've got an offer from Grey College so I'm most interested in that, but are all rooms generally the same style etc?

Basically, are they just typical student hall rooms-e.g. wardrobe, bed, desk, noticeboard, or do they have more character? (I'm sure Castle would be different, before anyone says). Are most of the more modern hill colleges similar in their room styles?

It's just there are NO pictures of hall rooms AT ALL on the website so I have no idea what my room would be like if I were to go there!

Anyone seen a Grey room/is in a Grey room? Or just describe your room and say what college you're in?

Thanks

I poked around on Flickr and all I could find was this:

Looks like a double room.

There are about ten million photos of the fireworks though.
Here's a couple of pics of my college room in Grey last year:

(Johnny Depp posters unfortunately not included!)

Also there are bits of various rooms visible in a lot of these photos.

Ooh only just discovered this! Cool photos. I saw a room when I went on a college tour on the open day (even though I didn't stay over) and they looked pretty good!

Still nervous about the whole sharing a room thing. Wouldn't mind doing it for the second/third term but not the first! Ah well I love Durham and Grey too much too let that stop me!

*Han* did you go to the open day?

Yeah I did, but I couldn't stay over in College :frown: I loved it though and I firmed it!

Yeahhh I saw a room too, it looked nice! And same, I don't want to share in first term, it would be nice to have my own space to like...get away from it all or whatever, I need my own space haha. Second or Third term would be fine cos surely you could choose who to share with? But First term would be a bit daunting! Eek!

Yeah I think seeing the college really made up my mind. I could just imagine myself there.

I don't know how Im going to do it but thats really what I'd like to do; ask not to share and then say Im prepared to share for 2nd and 3rd. You're right, it just feels better to have your own space where you can be by yourself.
And yeah I need my own space too or I got grouchy haha

They said when I was there that in a new term you only swap to share with people on your corridor, so you'll have already known them for a while so I guess you'll be more comfortable sharing with one of them. So it won't be so bad 2nd and 3rd.

I love the JCR! The TV is HUGE! I just really liked the whole college, it was great.
I didn't get to stay over either so I'm a bit nervous I don't actually know what other people are like, but I guess I'll just have to find out come October! *crosses fingers for grades*

Oh my god, same here, in fact I even posted a message a few days ago on here asking will it be a problem that most people will have met before! Argh! At least I'm not the only one hehe.

Yeah the JCR was awesome, all those cool sofas as well, it looked so relaxed and I'm sure I'd feel really at home there.

Haha yeah, grades permitting *fingers crossed* I'll be able to see it for myself too.

I felt completely the same, I was worried that people would have made some friends they would then know come October, and I'd be completely on my own!
But you're right, we won't be the only ones. There'll be people who couldn't go, or those who did go and won't get in, or people on deferred entry etc.

Yeah it all looked really laid-back and not stuck up at all, sort of scruffy in a nice, relaxed way. Also did you see the place where you stay in your third year?! Wow! Can't wait for that, it looked gorgeous!

Ok the more I talk about this the more excited I am about it haha, except I have to decide between Durham and St Andrews....arrgh I hate decisions.

Choose Durham! St Andrews is meant to be a boring town hehe.

Yeah I have heard that quite a few times, but I guess I'll see for myself if I go up for an open day. Have to say though, after the open day Durham is quite a way ahead!

I was just wondering if anybody who is already Grey knew anything about how do they allocate rooms? Is it by what choie of let you made, then just by a ballot thing? They say that Hollingside is supposed to be quiter than Elvet, for example, can what someone puts on their form get them placed into one building rather than the other?

Is it possible for first years to be put in Holgate House? It says 'generally final year students', so does that mean some first years get placed in there or is it very unlikely?

Honestly Im not trying to cheat the system and get in somewhere particular hehe I dont care where I go, Im just interested. I really dont understand how they do it and I was wondering if there was any way of knowing now where I might, roughly, end up (if I get the grades :s-smilie:) for example by the let option I choose etc.

Thank you!
There will be eight freshers who get to live in Holgate, because there are four shared rooms. But there's really no way of knowing whereabouts you'll end up. And speaking as someone who lived in Hollingside all of last year, it is most certainly not any quieter than the other blocks!

Haha Ok thank you! No I didnt really think thered be a way of knowing, I was just interested. Is Hollingside good? I only saw a room in Elvet. Or are they all pretty similar?
Hollingside is very nice- the rooms are smaller than in Elvet or Oswald, but they were refurbished recently so the furniture is nice and new and there's masses of storage. My bed was also amazingly comfy.
What are the bathrooms like? The guy who gave me a tour said he shares 3 showers with 12 people or something, is that what it's usually like? And are they like..separate bathrooms or like school toilets and then a shower cubicle? (if that makes sense). I just realised I never saw the bathrooms when I went on a tour!
You'll share the bathrooms with the other people on your corridor, yeah, and the setup is usually separate toilet stalls and shower cubicles.

I stayed in Oswald during the Grey post-app open day and thought that the rooms were a bit basic considering the cost, but i'm sure they would look good once you get in and add your personal touches. Also Oswald had a bit of a funky smell, but u got used to that pretty quickly lol didnt stop me firming Grey staright away though!!!
Has anyone else seen these funky new virtual tours?? pretty useful for prospective students
