How to introduce my nickname when starting at collage?

Let's get this over with. I am not the biggest fan of my name. It kinda sucks and when i go to collage, i really want a fresh start, per say. Some of my friends already call me Pidge (the character from Voltron Legendary Defender) due to the similarities between my and the character. (its also in my username so go figure).

I'm very socially awkward. I cannot read body language and tone all that well, and all that jazz. So how do i introduce myself to other people next year as Pidge? do i just go 'Hi, I'm Pidge? Is that how stuff works?
