Im thinking of volunteering for the Samaritans but was wondering whether they train you to help people or whether you just have to sit there and listen? I want to be able to help people out not just pretend I care and be really patronising by making those 'help yourself' comments. Thanks

I think you requires some training, to explain how you can't give advice, just sit and listen.

What you can and can't do.
Just things like that, I mean, you could be saving someone's life, I do expect some training would be needed so you don't push them the wrong way.

Your doing a great thing if you do volunteer.

I hope you've really thought this through, the Samaritans have a really tough job. Do you fully understand what it involves?

I am a Samaritans volunteer - completed the training in February.

You do need to do a training course for about 8-10 weeks. You cover all the various points that you need to become an effective Samaritan - it isn't simply ''sitting and listening'' - far from it! There is a lot to take in at first, but if you feel like going for it, then do! If you feel it isn't for you then you can quit at any time.

Best thing for you to do, to get the ball rolling would be to contact your local branch and ask when the next information evening is. http://www.samaritans.org/talk_to_so..._branches.aspx

If you've got any questions, feel free to PM me
