Van Mildert vs Collingwood

I don't know which to choose! I started looking at Durham University sooo long ago (nearly a year in fact!) and at first Collingwood was my numero uno choice. Then i changed my mind to Van Mildert, because of three reasons:

1. No shared rooms (but now i hear some people are having to share after all)
2. Network point in all rooms
3. Relatively low number of applications

However, now i'm thinking maybe i should choose Collingwood after all, because i've just looked on the JCR (virtual tour etc) and it looks, and sounds, really good, and *in general* i get the impression that Collingwood is just more...what's the word...well-regarded. Also, VM just doesn't look as nice (from the outside - might be nice on the inside - obv i don't know).

Ack! Help! Which has more comfy rooms? I just read on another thread from a while back that Mildert rooms are 'ming'.

I need to decide by Monday because i'll need to ask for my online application to be sent back to me from my referee before she sends it!! At the moment i've put Mildert down.

I've got no objective evidence to back this up with, whatsoever, but I'd say Collingwood.

As it happens, I changed college choice from VM to Collingwood at the last minute. But I've never visited either college so...

It's only a college choice though, so I doubt it really matters that much. From the look of the prospectus, compared to Castle, Hatfield, Collingwood, Grey - most the other colleges could belong to a different uni - as they're much less competitive! If you like VM, then you should probably apply, if only because of the favourable stats.

collingwood 96% single rooms
network in every room
and applications are higher but also higher capacity.

choice is easy...
I thought the rooms in Mildert were brilliant when I visited in March, and it's got a really dining hall. I think there's network points in all the rooms now, and a few of the blocks are being refurbished this year so they're gonna be great! I've never been inside Collingwood though so I can't really say.

Here's a photo of the lake in Mildert in winter, and the buildings in the background are some of the accomodation blocks.

I'm going to Collingwood!!!!

As TK says, it's mainly single rooms, only a small minority have to share!!! And if you do share it is only for ONE term unless you fall in love and like it so much and ask to do it for all THREE terms!

Collingwood looks over the Botanical Gardens too, so it's a lovely view. It's got a lot of good facilities as it is a relatively new building.

If u get rejected from a college do u get rejected from the university even if uve been accepted on ur course? or do they find you another college?? im confused

If you get accepted by the uni first. Then your application gets sent to a college. If they have already recieved the quota for the subject your studying, it'll be sent to another. You won't get chucked out.

omg put COLLINGWOOD - why? ill tell u

1) there arent any shared rooms
2) there are most places
3) amazing facilities - own gym, botanical gardens
4) lots of ensuites
5) i got an offer there! *but turned it down - wishing i hadnt*
6) van mildert rooms are really small
7) you have a red phone box
8) you ahve a pizza bar

to be honest though, i was also stuck betwene van mildert and collingwood. at the end of the day, if they want you - theyll have you because your accpeted by department first. then they ahve to assing you to the college and they do this by quotas, ie, if they already have loads of history students at the college youve chosen, youll be put into another. i was lucky to geta place at my first choice

I was looking through the prospectus at all of the colleges when I was applying, and as soon as I had read Collingwood's page my mind was made up  I'm starting there a week today and I can't wait

Collingwood's uber-competitive, you're probs more likely to get into Mildert. Plus, ducks! And it feels like a nice little community, Collingwood's too impersonal for me!

Btw, how are places in colleges allocated, first come frist served, or do they wait until the deadline when they've got all the aps and then start deciding?

I don't think which college u end up in makes that much of a difference anyway. (can't believe i just typed that when this time last year it seemed like such a huge deal!) They're all great, whichever one u end up at you'll end up loving. If it helps, Van Mildert is renowned for being musical...

Yeah, ucas is always banging on about how everyone has an equal chance if they apply before the deadline, but i think that's rubbish - apply early or your college might be full.
I read in the prospectus that you should apply before December 15th.
