there's the glasgow union and the queen margaret union, the only difference being that the gu used to be the men's one while the qmu was the girl's one, nowadays however there's no difference cause they've got dual membership therefore you can get into either one regardless of which you're a member of...

I'm not sure how societies work out, membership-wise, but the GUU has a lot of the more traditional ones, like the Dialectic Society etc. Personally I'd go for the GUU. If you've not been inside it, it's a wonderful old building, whereas the QM is a bit of a dump really. It seems to suit me rather more.

The QMU is better for music, and members get into gigs and events cheaper. That's about all I'll say for it.

Yes, yes - I'm not at Glasgow, but I know both of them quite well, and I might be turning up there in a few years for some short-lived postgrad pissing about.

I'm a QMU member personally. The atmosphere seems more laid-back there and it's hard to beat some Cheesy Pop. :biggrin: The building may not look that nice from the outside but it's nice inside - Jim's Bar is a great place to hang out and the food is better than at the GUU.

The GUU has Deep Six which can be pretty good but The Hive permanently smells of vomit...(and during Fresher's week, the air-con was broken, it was disgusting!!) If you're a Subway fan, there's one in the GUU.

You can easily get away with joining both though...

I like the GUU. The building (both inside and outside) is gorgeous and being a fan of rugby it is my sort of place. Saying that, you are much more likely to find me in the QMU because that is where all my friends hang out. QM is a bit of dive though.
They're both dumps in dire need of refurbishment - in fact, the GU extension much more so than the QMU! Ever been rained on in Playing Fields on a wet day?

It makes no difference really. Personally, I think the QM has lost its way a bit; Freshers' week is conitinually poor, they don't get the good bands they used to playing the venue, and Cheesy Pop is alright, but recycling it for every event at the end of term is dull - at least the GU has Daft Friday!

I'm no longer a member of either - despite the strong links between Glasgow Uni and the School of Art (such as sharing a prospectus!), GSA members cannot join either union. I was a member of one union each year before I changed course - I prefer the GU.

i just found this thread,i usually just basically stay in the health and relationships forum,but to define the difference between the unions i always turn to a piece of graffiti found on the wall of ones of the bogs in the library:

QMU= Poser fags

GUU= homophobe jocks

work round that

Hmm. I'd say I'm more of a "poser fag" than a "homophobe jock"; but being a "poser fag" I fancy a shot at debating, so I suppose the natural choice is the GUU. :wink:

i always thought id end up debating at the GUU but i love jims bar too much and to be honest havent been back to the GUU much since my freshers week in 2006, but ive been told i have to go to the hive tommorow so who knows maybe i'll be converted

I'm a male chauvinist, so I'll join the GUU.
...providing the GU's still there! It's "in serious financial difficulty" according to this week's GU Guardian...
Yep, I think it's because of the Subway and Costa. Everyone will be going in there and the GUU won't be getting much money back.

probably means at least one of the bars will probably close,but they have got quite a few in there if i remember correctly,if the GUU did close it would just mean the QMU would get record business,but be overrun by rugby players as well... every silver lining has a cloud.

though i dont trust the GU guardian too much,or any student paper that puts gerry adams on the front page for no specific reason
He was there for a reason, it was the 10th anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement. The photo was just much bigger than the tiny story beside it! :p:

I think £1 Wednesdays may also have something to do with the GUU's financial trouble!

His beard is terrific though.

theres probably a connection between beards and trustworthiness that i cant quite figure out, and fair enough but the picture was masssive,i was expecting an interview with the man himself,but nope.

i'm always suprised the unions arent consistently popular amongst everyone to be honest, drinks prices may be going up (i swear in first year on a monday i could get a corona for a pound in the QMU) but they're still well cheaper than everywhere else in the city.
just join both.. it's doubtful they will ever find out..

needless to say it actually doesnt make any difference really.. just like £1 off entry on nights out. It's not like you won't be allowed into a union if you arent a member. I joined the QM purely because i think it's a better union as it doesnt constantly smell of piss (eg. The Hive) and Cheesy Pop is a good laugh. Also because it's convenient for me, as it's right beside the modern languages building, but as it doesnt affect the daytime, this really doesn't matter..

I only really go to the GU when I want a subway and can't be arsed going to the one on Byers Road or sometimes on a Thursday night.. it's the only time the Hive is bareable and even then i need to be pretty blocked. Still some good times at it though.

The moral of the story.. join both and make sure the bouncers dont see both membership cards in your wallet when you're showing i.d. :smile:

P.S. Did you see in that article in the GU Guardian that the guy who went over to N.I. got asked twice if he was Prod/Catholic or Rangers/Celtic.. I'm sorry.. but this NEVER happens and I'm from there lol. Made it out to sound that's how we say hello to people
At the beginning of the year I saw signs up saying that you had to join one or other union for some reason. It would be for the evening/night things, but I didn't see why you had to join a union and why your matric card wasn't enough. Does anyone know the story behind it?
you don't HAVE to join a union.. membership just gives you discounts on nights out and for the QM it allows you to get alcohol from the shop.. but really it's not necessary to be a member of either

I knew there were two unions, but this is the first I've heard of having to join one or the other. Any reason for the rule?
