Hey,

Just thought I'd make a thread for all the students who have/will firmed Kent for the coming year so that we can all get to know each other before we arrive!

I'm doing Psychology with Clinical Psychology including a year in industry. I've applied for Parkwood accomodation. Erm.. My hobbies include gaming, films, music and Jitsu. My favourite bands include Tool, Modest Mouse, Primus and A Perfect Circle; I used to play guitar in a band but I quit a while back. I play games like Counter-Strike and I've recently started playing Diablo 2 again. I used to play Everquest, Starwars Galaxies and Vanguard. So yeah I'm pretty much a nerd My favourite films are Garden State, The Starwars Saga, Howl's Moving Castle, Requiem for a Dream and Last Days (to name a few). My favourite TV shows are Peepshow, Futurama, The IT Crowd, Scrubs and Lost.

What about everyone else?

PS - I've just noticed how my thread sounds like it should be on one of those cheesy dating channels

I've chose Kent as my 'firm choice' too, so hopefully I'll get my 280 points that I need to get in!!!

I'll be taking Classical and Archaeological Studies...which I really enjoy although I'm feeling a bit nervous coz I was only one of four students on my course that attended the UCAS visit day recently!!!

I'm sort of a mature student (well, I'm only 21) and I study A levels via correspondence courses. So its gonna be quite daunting getting back into the "school system" as I've been out of it for 4 years now.

But enough of that.

Let's see...hobbies. Well, I guess I love reading. I like to read a lot of Ancient literature, fantasy fiction, popular novels etc. The Harry Potter series is amazing!!!
I love movies too. I love the Star Wars movies, Disney films, Studio Ghibli etc. Howl's Moving Castle is brilliant! By the way, great Calcifer avatar GodspeedGehenna!!!
I also love Japanese culture in general and can speak a teeny bit of the language...though not enough to get by with.
Sometimes I'll play the odd video game or two, although not so much recently, what with all the studying.
I like a lot of different music, and I really like a lot of over-the-top, bombastic stuff like Meat Loaf, Bon Jovi and some Guns n Roses.

I'm not really one for alcohol-fuelled binges, but as EKnowles has said, "just hanging out with some friends is good enough for me".

That's not to say I don't enjoy the odd drink. I'm just not keen on spewing my guts up every other night of the week!

Damn!!! I've just made myself seem a right nerd!!

Well...I guess its true, really.

I'm glad you like my avatar

When I was little, I always wanted to be an archaeologist, while all the other kids wanted to be firemen, policemen whatever lol. There were a few moments in the uni application process where I was tempted to ditch Psychology and go for that instead!

I agree with all you guys about the alcohol binges.. I prefer to stay in with a group of good friends, have a few beers and just talk + laugh. But every now and then (very occasionally), its always fun to go out and have a few one too many.

I've always wanted to go to Japan and the culture really interests me. I really enjoy Jiu Jitsu, a Japanese martial art; as a result I know a few Japanese words, but they're limited to very odd things like outer, inner, sweep, hip, lock and 1-10 lol.

I won't be going out every single night, but I won't be staying in all the time either- but...money! I don't understand how some people fund their 7 day rave, unless they walk everywhere and never eat.

I think its healthy to have a good balance of party and chill time. Of course uni is more like party all the time But thats ok, its the only time of your life when you can get away with it!

So yeah, I'll be having chill out time, but I'm also up for a good old paaarty

I've firmed Kent as well, though I only applied to Kent and only to one course so I didn't really have any options My offer was unconditional as I did my exams last year and already have the results.

I'll be taking Comparative Literary Studies at Kent, which I'm pretty sure I'll enjoy a lot. I'm hoping to apply for Darwin College/Houses for accomodation but I haven't gotten my welcome letter yet so I can't apply yet.

Oh, and I forgot to say (though I'm sure you can guess from my username), my name is Kim I'm 20 years old, 21 on May 23rd. I did my a levels late due to leaving my secondary school early through depression. So I've come a long way

I love reading, writing, watching films and watching TV. My favourite genre is fantasy, closely followed by sci-fi, so I like books/films/TV shows like; Howl's moving castle, LotR, Serenity + Firefly, Heroes, Wizard of Earthsea series (Ursula Le Guin), Chrestomanci series (Dianna Wynne Jones), The Matrix, War of the flowers (Tad Williams) etc etc...

I also like socialising and meeting new people, although I am generally a shy person. I do like to go out and party sometimes, but other times I am just as happy staying in and having a few drinks while chatting with my friends.

Another thing that I enjoy is gaming (console/PC/internet/RPG on paper/board). I have a Wii at home (unfortunately not coming to Uni with me ) and I love playng things like Lego Star Wars on that. I also like games like Travian and Notpron online. Warhammer 40k and Dungeons and Dragons are pretty good, as are board games like Monopoly and Scrabble.

I'm usually up for trying new things, and hope that Uni will open up a few new things for me

Sorry this is so long and in-depth.

EDIT to say that Diablo 2 is a really good game

Yup, I've only got Howl's moving castle but I want to get Tales from Earthsea and then maybe some of Studio Ghibli's other films, like My neighbour Totoro.

Calcifer is really cute and funny in the film, loved him

Oh! I forgot that I'd seen 'Spirited away' at the cinema!

I'm bringing my laptop to Uni, which would be better than nothing.

I'm really looking forward to meeting you guys as well, you seem so nice and friendly.

Does anyone happen to know how fast the internet is, particularly at parkwood?

And do they block online gaming and torrents etc?

I think they block ports for online gaming...I heard that the online Xbox thing doesn't work, and possibly WoW... not sure how accurate I am in that.

No idea how fast the internet is, sorry.

Xbox Live - Blocked. Steam - Blocked. PSN is also blocked too, I believe.

I don't think World of Warcraft is blocked, which is probably good to stop the possible NERDRAGE~!

I've no idea about the other games, but I'm sure you can e-mail the computing section of the Uni and ask.

Internet Speeds are superfast. Downloads of around 500kb/s from Rapidshare is pretty normal.

Torrents are supposed to be unallowed, but I, and anyone I know who has used them, have had no problems with them.

DC++ didn't work for me, but I don't know whether that's my fault or it being blocked.

Parkwood's speeds are as fast as anywhere else on campus, ie. very. I am basing this on my old out in the countryside speeds that I've got back home, so it might even be slower than some people have at home. However, it's good enough for me.

One thing they do slow down (seemingly) is YouTube videos. Often they seem to take an age to load, particularly in the middle of the day.

Internet Internet Internet Internet Internet.
